Reflections from Katie

Many people connect October with Halloween. And many people connect Halloween with kids. And kids with school. So October becomes Halloween month at school. At Cambridgeport, we have had a history of not celebrating Halloween at school, and you might be wondering why that is. While I may have been able to explain it to you in theoretical terms before, last year a student wrote an essay about what it feels like to be surrounded by conversations about Halloween, and this essay convinced me more than ever that keeping Halloween out of school is the right thing to do. Lorna

Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood?
Meet JK Teacher Lorna Holland!

How long have you been at Cambridgeport?

Since the school started! The school started as one room in the Morse, and then it moved over to Blessed Sacrament. I started there as the gym teacher.

What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?
I went snowboarding with with my son Imani last winter! I actually beat him!

What is your favorite TV show?
It is definitely Raven’s Home. It is a really good family show.

If you could be an animal, what kind would you be?
Probably an octopus, because as a teacher or a parent, you always need more arms!

Rainy Day
Rainy mornings can be colorful.

Coats

Find a Coat, Leave a Coat
It is that time of year where we are getting ready to launch our successful Find a Coat, Leave a Coat event. Please, please, please send in your washed outgrown mittens, hats & scarves, warm winter jackets & snow boots – leave them outside Kristen’s office on the first floor. Why spend money on something new when your child may only wear it for a season? Let's swap and exchange items here at school. More info about launch date coming soon.

Cambridge Bicycle Safety
Does your child bike to school? Do you bike with your child to school? Would you or your child like to get around by bike but feel it is not safe?

Cambridge Bicycle Safety is an all-volunteer group of Cambridge residents who are asking for safer bike lanes and a complete network of protected lanes throughout Cambridge. Separated lanes in the last two years--Cambridge, Brattle and sections of Mass Ave--have been the result of people in the community organizing. But we need more voices.
We are looking for stories of parents and their children who bike or would like to bike. If you have a story and want to learn more, email us.

Lunch Week
National School Lunch Week

National School Lunch Week was October 15th – 19th! This is the first year Cambridge Public Schools participated, and we showed students there is ‘Lots 2 Love’ about school meals! 30 million students enjoy healthy lunches every school day in the U.S. We had lucky tray giveaways, cultural meals, and special guest servers that week. Students showed their love on Friday with a heart-colored or –themed shirt, and earn a fun sticker!

SAFETY REMINDER
Our Special Start staff have asked that parents and children please remember not to park scooters and bikes next to the railing. The handles poke thru the railing making it unsafe for our youngest students on the stairs. Thanks for your help.
