The Art Room

By Ms. Lilli
Junior K and Kindergarteners are using a variety of dry color media to make a big drawing that combines lines, shapes, texture, and free draw.

1st graders are making big things out of lots of little things. This practice will culminate in a colorful, relief mosaic.

2nd graders are learning about bilateral symmetry and drawing half faces, half people, and half doodles that can be rubbed into paper to create a mirror image that completes the picture.

Book Character Pumpkins
Walk into the library and you’re overwhelmed with the number of pumpkins decorated as favorite book characters. Ms. Kugel offered this optional challenge to all students and the results are impressive! During library class, students will vote on their favorite book character pumpkin. It is going to be tough to decide because there are so many excellent entries. See a few samples >>

Playworks Update
Playworks believes in the power of play to bring out the best in every kid. During the month of October, classrooms experienced Class Game Time which is active learning time where each class gets to work with the Playworks Site Coordinator, Carolyn, to learn games. Students learn conflict resolution, teamwork and communication skills.
Starting this month, 4th and 5th grade students will be trained as Junior coaches by the Playworks Program Manager Brendan Toohey. Junior coaches have a wonderful opportunity to learn about recess game facilitation, conflict resolution leadership, as well as being responsible for leading optional structured games at recess for younger students. These student leaders will be role models, demonstrating responsibility... not only at recess, but at all times during the school day.

Apple cider

Annual Autumn Tradition...Cider Pressing
Students in Ms. McNulty's third grade class enjoy making cider from Macintosh, Gala, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, and Honey Crisp apples. Thank you to our garden coordinator Mr. Koch, CitySprouts volunteers, our teachers, assistants, and interns, and parent volunteers for making this annual tradition an incredible one.

Apple Tasting

Apple Tasting
Ms. Wong's first grade class tried three different varieties of apples; Gala, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith. Students were encouraged to observe the apple's texture, smell, taste, and sound of the crunch. They were asked to think about the sweetness and the crunchiness. They rated them on a chart to determine the sweetest and crunchiest apple.

Mindfulness
A parent workshop on Mindfulness and Understanding the Brain was held on Monday, October 29. Natalia Cepeda led the discussion on ways classrooms are using mindfulness and how mindfulness can be used at home to reduce stress.

In our district, Mindfulness is offered to classrooms. Natalia Cepeda, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Schools teacher is teaching the Mindful Schools curriculum in six classrooms at Baldwin. It is an 8-week program where she is in the classroom twice a week teaching and practicing mindfulness skills. Learn more >>

Time to Learn

Quality Learning and Professional Time
Studies conducted last year, and meetings with diverse stakeholders since, have raised concerns about the amount and quality of learning and professional time in Cambridge Public Schools. CPS is in the midst of a study and design process examining a range of options for improving learning and professional time, with an initial focus on elementary and Upper School schedules.

View the latest updates on this process on the CPS website, and save the dates for the following Public Forums:

December 5 | 6PM | Morse School
January 10 | 6PM | Kennedy-Longfellow School
January 12 | 10AM | Graham & Parks School

The Superintendent will develop a proposal that will be shared for stakeholder feedback in January. In addition to the public forums, school-based meetings are being scheduled for all schools. Any changes in school schedules will benefit from a full planning year in 2019-20 before implementation in 2020-2021.
