Greetings from Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

This Friday we wrap up our first quarter of the 2018-19 school year. Hard to believe it went by so quickly! Students have been busy writing essays, conducting experiments, discussing novels, grappling with math problems, and developing their linguistic, artistic and musical talents. They have also been honing their group building skills, exploring topics that support their physical and emotional well-being and, we hope, having fun in the process--at least most of the time! We hope that the Learning Previews have helped you engage in conversation with your student around the topics that they have delved into these opening months of school.

The end of the quarter is the time to check in on student progress. Our fall Learning Partners Conferences start in a week. Teachers value the chance to meet with you so that teacher, family and student are all working together in support of continued learning and growth. Please look in the newsletter for sign up information. Additionally, you can expect first quarter progress reports to go live in Aspen next Friday--please note they will be mailed home for families without internet access. For those of you who have signed up for conferences before report cards go live, teachers will have grade information available for you.

Here’s to a strong second quarter!

Families of RAUC Community Gala a Huge Success
Not only did attendees indeed enjoy the promised festive evening--the event also raised $16,000 in support of the 8th grade Washington DC trip and other community trips! In addition to $1250 from the dance, we are well on our way to reaching the year’s fundraising goals. Thanks to FRAUC Co-chairs Deirdre Logan and John O’Neil for organizing the event, along with the event committee, to all the people who donated time and services for the silent auction, and of course to Deirdre Logan and Adam Berinsky for opening their hosting.

Reminder to Sign Up for Learning Partners Conferences
Teachers hope to meet with each family at our fall Learning Partners Conferences. Make sure your student attends as well so everyone hears the same message! Here is the sign-up link if you still need to schedule a meeting: https://cloud.ptcscheduler.com/rau/. Please call Taraneh Ahmadi, Family Partnership Coordinator at 617.349.4060 x2041 or Linette Maloney at 617.349.4060 if you do not have access to online sign up or need assistance.

Honoring Our Veterans
Next Monday we have a day off of school for Veterans Day. This Monday, November 5, the RAUC and Peabody communities came together to reflect on the meaning of this day. In addition to hearing from Sgt Timothy Norton, Peabody Early Bird Singers, RAUC 8th grade orchestra and RAUC Chorus students inspired the two communities with their performances. 8th graders Helen Kidanemariam and Helen Hailemariam read the poem, In Flanders Field. Special thanks to Ms. Bach (Peabody), Mr. DeWitte, and Ms. Phillips for inspiring such powerful musical performances, to Mr. Saveriano for supporting the clear poetry reading, and to Peabody Principal Jen Ford for overseeing the event.

Family Flu Clinic Reminder!
Peabody/RAUC’s Family Flu clinic is THIS week. Get your whole family over to the school gym on Wednesday, November 7th from 5:30 to 7:30PM for flu shots. Please note that FluMist and high-dose vaccines are NOT available at this clinic. While there is no charge to the public for flu shots, people are encouraged to bring their health insurance cards with them. More info: 617.665.3855.

From Our Nurse
Flu season has arrived. Please review the following guidelines to help insure the safety and health of our school community.
  • Do not send your child to school with a temperature 100.4F/38C or higher, or if your child has a lower temperature and clearly is not feeling well.
  • Keep your child home for 24 hours after the fever has gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine (example; Tylenol or Advil).
  • Call your pediatrician if your child has a sore throat that lasts more than 2 days or has vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than 24 hours.
  • Students who need antibiotics for contagious illnesses (example; strep throat) must take them for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Please inform the school nurse if your child has had a recent illness like strep throat or eye infection.
A sick child cannot learn effectively and cannot participate in classes in a meaningful way. Keeping a sick child home helps prevent the spread of illness in our school community and allows the time to rest and recover.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Lastly, please talk to your healthcare provider about getting a flu vaccine or attend the Flu Clinic at Peabody School in the school gym on Wednesday, November 7th from 5:30-7:30PM.

Thank you,
Anita Barandao, RN

Time to Learn

Quality Learning and Professional Time
Studies conducted last year, and meetings with diverse stakeholders since, have raised concerns about the amount and quality of learning and professional time in Cambridge Public Schools. CPS is in the midst of a study and design process examining a range of options for improving learning and professional time, with an initial focus on elementary and Upper School schedules.

View the latest updates on this process on the CPS website, and save the dates for the following Public Forums:

December 5 | 6PM | Morse School
January 10 | 6PM | Kennedy-Longfellow School
January 12 | 10AM | Graham & Parks School

The Superintendent will develop a proposal that will be shared for stakeholder feedback in January. In addition to the public forums, school-based meetings are being scheduled for all schools. Any changes in school schedules will benefit from a full planning year in 2019-20 before implementation in 2020-2021.

Cambridge Flu Clinics
The flu (influenza) can be a serious illness. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from influenza is for all adults and children over 6 months old to get a flu shot every year. Cambridge Public Health is offering free flu shots at:

  • Peabody School - Wednesday, November 7 from 5:30 - 7:30PM in the gym.

There is no charge, but please bring your health insurance card if possible. For more information and the full list of flu clinics, visit our website or call the recorded flu clinic info line, 617.665.3855.

Cambridge Bicycle Safety
Does your child bike to school? Do you bike with your child to school? Would you or your child like to get around by bike but feel it is not safe? Cambridge Bicycle Safety is an all-volunteer group of Cambridge residents who are asking for safer bike lanes and a complete network of protected lanes throughout Cambridge. Separated lanes in the last two years--Cambridge, Brattle and sections of Mass Ave--have been the result of people in the community organizing. But we need more voices. We are looking for stories of parents and their children who bike or would like to bike. If you have a story and want to learn more, email us.
