Protocols & Procedures
It is hard to believe that we have been in school for just about three months. The students have all settled in, and it is amazing to observe them working in their classrooms with such routine and enthusiasm! Whether they are working collaboratively with peers or focused on an independent task, the level of engagement is always inspiring.

As a community, it is important for our staff and families to work together to make sure that all of our children feel safe and comfortable in their school environment. Since we are getting ready for our Thanksgiving break, we thought it would be the ideal time to send out a reminder of some of our Tobin protocols/procedures that both keep our students safe and ensure their sense of comfort during the school day.

Turkey Trot!
As you may have read in the Tobin Weekly last week, we have revised the annual Turkey Trot, and we are excited to have the children partake in a donation to the Margaret Fuller House. The Margaret Fuller house is the largest emergency food pantry in the city, providing healthy food to over 10,000 people in-need.

We NEED your help:
Please consider making a monetary donation to support our children as they walk/run to raise money to donate. If you are willing to donate (any amount counts), please make checks payable to the Friends of Tobin. They will make the donation to the food pantry on our behalf. Please send checks to school via backpack express (clearly labeled) or drop them off to Mary Frawley in the Main Office.

If you would like to join us for this event, please check out the schedule below:

8:40-9AM | Lower Elementary

Garden Update
Thank you to the Tobin school community for making this cider pressing season a success! A shout out to the parents/guardians who helped make it possible for 10 classes came out to the garden to press fresh apple cider. It may be getting colder, but the garden is still busy getting ready for the winter. In the coming weeks, classes will be planting winter rye, building hoop houses, and collecting seeds for next season. Stop by the garden to see the still colorful flowers in the pollinator bed.

Songwriting Workshop
Jim and Sophia Papoulis, our guests at the Spring Concert last year, will return to Tobin for a two-day songwriting workshop. Jim and Sophia will work with both Lower and Upper Elementary, grades 1-5. They will guide the students through the whole process, from determining a theme to recording a track and publishing a score! This is an amazing opportunity for our students and I am excited for the collaboration!

Of note, the first day, 11/19/18, will be for all students, grades 1-5, and the second, 11/26/18, will be for Upper Elementary, grades 4-5. Please check the schedule below for specific times.

Jim and Sophia will return for our Winter Concert, 2/1/19, where we will feature the world premiere of our students' creation!

Time to Learn

Quality Learning and Professional Time
Studies conducted last year, and meetings with diverse stakeholders since, have raised concerns about the amount and quality of learning and professional time in Cambridge Public Schools. CPS is in the midst of a study and design process examining a range of options for improving learning and professional time, with an initial focus on elementary and Upper School schedules.

View the latest updates on this process on the CPS website, and save the dates for the following Public Forums:

December 5 | 6PM | Morse School
January 10 | 6PM | Kennedy-Longfellow School
January 12 | 10AM | Graham & Parks School

The Superintendent will develop a proposal that will be shared for stakeholder feedback in January. In addition to the public forums, school-based meetings are being scheduled for all schools. Any changes in school schedules will benefit from a full planning year in 2019-20 before implementation in 2020-2021.
