FMA 5th Graders Study Earth’s Systems at Alewife
On Thursday, November 15, the FMA fifth graders visited the Alewife Reservation as a part of their unit on Earth's Systems. Susan Agger, our tour guide, was very impressed with student engagement. They visited the watershed and learned how water moves and is recycled. Students also viewed the wetlands and discussed how a four Earth systems interact in those areas. It was exciting to see the students connecting what they learned in class with what they were experiencing during the field trip.
Afterwards, students reflected on their favorite part of the trip:
Syeira - It was amazing to see the swans in their natural environment.
Lucy - I learned how as water moved through the watershed, it got cleaner and cleaner.
Raul - We got to see how trash gets dropped off by water. It was cool getting to be a water molecule.

Dinner of Thanks
This year’s annual dinner of thanks event, held in the FMA gym, was as festive as ever. Food from across the world was well represented, including the traditional American thanksgiving meal of baked turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. Desserts were also plentiful. The gym was filled to capacity, everyone ate their fill, and everyone had a great time. Family Liaison Daniel Skerrit put it best when he observed that the joyous atmosphere in the gym was "(t)ruly the essence of our FMA community; we're all in this together.”
The event was made possible by our visionary leader Robin Harris, the Dinner of Thanks committee members, and numerous volunteers, supporters and partners: Fletcher Maynard Academy PTO, Izzy's Restaurant, AXA Team, Community Charter School of Cambridge, CRLS Chorus, Tutoring Plus and Senator Sal Di Domenico. We are grateful for all the support and look forward to next year’s celebration!
Thank you all for making this years event a success.
What are we thankful for?
The 2018 Thanksgiving holiday season Fletcher Maynard Academy provided over 25 families with Gift Baskets consisting of all the fixings for a thanksgiving feast and gift cards. The main objective was to assist families celebrating the holidays by providing nutritious meals. The FMA Resource Center was able to collect and distribute all of the necessities and provide these items to our low-income families. We are grateful to all our community partners for these donations.
