PeaceGreetings from Julie Craven!

Dear RAUC Families,

In this final newsletter of 2018, I want to express my gratitude for all you do to support your children’s education. You send them to school ready to learn, support them at home both to do their homework and to take a break when they need it, and you advocate for them when you have questions. We are deeply appreciative of your partnership.

I also want to appreciate the RAUC teachers and staff who are so committed to educating all students. Their professionalism and compassion are apparent daily as I walk the halls, sit in on team meetings, and drop into classes. Educating each student in ways that completely meets their individual needs is a challenging ideal to aim for when you have 100 students to teach (or 300, if you are a Specials teacher!). And yet they continue to strive for that goal while remaining open to feedback. Thank you for your awareness of the enormity of their responsibility. So many of you do let me know how appreciative you are of the staff, and I pass that on to them, as it is always nice to hear!

Holidays and school vacations can bring challenges. Each of us has had a time in our lives when we benefitted from community support--a warm coat, ingredients for a meal, or help providing a gift you just can’t manage this year. Please reach out to our guidance counselor, Shanika Boadu ([email protected]) or Family Partnership Coordinator Taraneh Ahmadi ([email protected], 617.349.4060 x2041) if you need support in any way.

I wish each of you a break full of connections and joy. We look forward to welcoming students and families back in 2019!

Peace,
Julie Craven

Share Your Stories about Food & Support the RAUC Musical!
Every June, RAUC produces an original music that is partly written by the students. This year’s topic is food. Students hope to create a musical that tells the story of food in our community. They want to reflect the diversity of our community by weaving together stories around food and feasts. Please see the attached letter for more details! RAUC’s Winter Dance Sponsored by 6th Grade Families – Friday, January 25
This is the second of three dances, each one sponsored by families of a different grade level. This dance is sponsored by 6th grade families but anyone can sign up to help--we need volunteers to help make this dance a success! Stay tuned for a sign-up link that will be shared soon. It will run from 6 to 8 PM in the cafeteria. ALL students are welcome! As a RAUC community event, only RAUC students may attend; no outside guests please. Refreshments (pizza, snacks, water) will also be sold at the dance. All proceeds go directly to school enrichment funds through FRAUC.

Families are requested to donate:
- goods to sell at the dance concession stand,
- your time to set up, clean up, collect tickets, sell concessions or supervise the hallways during the dance.

Please note: Parents do not chaperone the actual dance itself. While you aren’t volunteering, you are encouraged to attend the very informative Speaker Series upstairs in the Health Room organized specifically with RAUC parents in mind. Details of the talk are below.

Save the Date: Parent Workshop on Supporting Healthy Relationships on Friday, January 25
We invite parents/guardians of children in grades 6-9 to join us at this talk organized specifically for RAUC parents for the same evening that you will bring your student to school for the Winter dance. Titled Resilience, Relationships and Risky Behavior: What Parents Can Do to Support Their Children's Development and Safety in 2019, this talk will be given by Justine Finn, Director of Relation-Shift (founded at the Harvard Innovation Lab). Let Taraneh Ahmadi ([email protected]) know if you’d like to attend, have questions or comments. The event is open to ALL parents in CPSD who can benefit from the talk. More info available in the flyer!

This interactive workshop will help you:
  • Learn how sexual harassment, violence and abuse show up in middle and high school
  • Learn what your children are learning about sex, gender, and relationships from social and traditional media
  • Discover free resources and tools to help your children foster healthy identities, relationships and behaviors
  • Gain confidence in talking with your children about tricky topics

Learning & Professional Time
Like any other resource, schools must use their time wisely if we hope to realize the promise of educational equity through rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive experiences for all learners.

In 2017-18, a joint group of educators and administrators, co-chaired by leaders from the Cambridge Education Association (CEA) and CPS Office of Curriculum and Instruction recommended that CPS “lengthen the standard day for students and staff at all levels.” After an extensive collaborative process, the Superintendent of Schools has decided to propose a moderate increase to the 6 hour elementary and upper school day, along with guidelines for effectively meeting the educational, developmental, and social-emotional needs of students.

A new FAQ has been posted in response to questions we have received during the community feedback process. More details from surveys, working groups, and feedback sessions will be posted soon. Learn more >>
