Hall Deco

Adding Life to the Halls of HSEP

This summer the halls of HSEP were repurposed to provide more space and hang posters that detail the new “Vision of a Graduate” for HSEP.

Lockers

Students in Ms. Rogers-Jensen’s classes also kicked the year off by decorating the remaining lockers in the hallway to reflect their personality.

Attendance Initiative
This month students at HSEP each worked with their advisor towards establishing an attendance goal for the school year. Students examined their attendance data from last year to help them set their goal. The school purchased a pair of Celtics tickets to serve as an incentive for students to come to school every day during the month. This month we had 7 students who made it into school every day! Their names were entered into a raffle on Friday, September 28 and the winner for this month was Desire O’Garro Bruce. Great job!

Our October attendance initiative will run from October 1st to October 19th and any student who has 0 unexcused absences during that time period will be entered into a raffle to win two tickets to SCREEEMFEST at Canobie Lake Park on a weekend of their choice.

Neuroanimation

New Courses Added at HSEP
This year students at HSEP have the opportunity to take STEAM Workshop, a new course designed by our Art teacher Ms. Rogers-Jensen. The course allows students to learn about Electronics, Engineering, Design Thinking, and will incorporate the use of 3D printing. Students have been hard at work early in the semester designing 3D boxes with circuits to light up a design of their choosing and are currently designing hovercrafts.

Next semester we will be offering NeuroAnimation, a project-based learning course focused on Mental Health that will use stop motion animation to create PSAs to teach the community about how mental health works. The course will be co-taught by our art teacher, Ms. Rogers-Jensen and our biology teacher, Ms. Robb.

Hip Hop Ex at HSEP
This year students at HSEP are partnering with students at HSEP and Harvard Graduate School to pilot Hip Hop Ex, a lab to experience, explore and experiment with the varied roles and possibilities for Hip Hop arts in educational settings. Students will be able to co-design a course to be taught on Hip Hop in the Cambridge Public Schools, learn from experts in the field, and support community events related to Hip Hop. The group will meet every other week on Thursdays throughout the year at HSEP and Harvard Graduate School of Education. The project is being spearheaded by Aysha Upchurch, an adjunct professor at Harvard, and Angie Uy-Ham, who directs the Design Lab for Cambridge Public Schools. Mr. Gibson will be the HSEP representative overseeing the project and is joined by Martin Bonder.

Getting Fit

HSEP Gets Fit
This year students and staff from HSEP will be taking part in an initiative to get fit and eat healthy. Our guidance counselor, Ms. Ferraro, worked very hard to obtain a grant for the school to provide new Physical Education opportunities for our students through the Cambridge in Motion mini-grants. Our school was awarded $500 and will utilize those funds to pay for PE instructors as well as healthy meals for our students. We are going to be offering a martial arts course by Willy Hanna, an instructor from Oom Yung Doe, as well as a physical fitness course from our very own Ms. Ferraro and Mr. Gibson. All students are required to participate on one of the courses each Wednesday for one hour.

In addition we will be welcoming in Nutritionist, Helen Sarpong, to work with our students and staff on how to prepare healthy meals.

Rindge Avenue Upper Campus Presents
Speaker Series for Parents
Friday, January 25, 2019 | 6 - 8PM
Nearly half of students in grades 7-12 reported experiencing sexual harassment in the previous year and 87% describe negative effects such as absenteeism and poor sleep. And more than ever before, socializing, exploring identity, and dating often occur between texts and social media, raising new challenges and positive opportunities. How can we as parents mentor our children to engage in healthy behaviors? How can we foster their confidence and capacity to solve problems and build their independence, while at the same time providing appropriate support and supervision as adults? If you have a child currently in grade 6-9 AND/OR this information would be beneficial for you, we invite you to join us. Participate in this interactive workshop and come away with new resources, skills and perspectives for you and your family. View the Flyer >>

Volunteer Opportunity

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine is a non-profit organization that provides a volunteer platform to recover excess fresh and prepared food from businesses and bring it to nearby non-profits who freely give this food to those in need. We are actively recruiting individual volunteers or small groups to sign up for weekly rescue slots. Some require a vehicle for transport and others can be done on foot or bicycle. Each volunteer opportunity averages only 45 minutes of time from start to finish. Learn more >>

Mayor's Program

Snow Shoveling

Seeking teens looking to be hired for shoveling this winter! The Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program partners with the Council On Aging each winter to help match local teens who are interested in making a little extra money with senior citizens and persons with disabilities in Cambridge who could use the extra help shoveling out. Teens should complete an application listing the neighborhoods they can shovel in during a snow storm (even if the T shuts down!), and the names of teens in that neighborhood will be shared with seniors looking to hire someone. Teens and seniors then negotiate a fair price and clear expectations for the job (with the teen keeping in mind that seniors are usually on fixed incomes, so don’t overcharge!). Teens are paid directly by the homeowner. If you have any questions, contact George Hinds.

Youth Employment

The Youth Employment Center, located in room 2101, is available each school day during all three lunches to assist young people who are hoping to access employment. The Center is staffed by employees of the City’s Office of Workforce Development and local non-profit Just A Start. Employees will work with any visitors to identify any currently recruiting employment programs that the teen should be referred to, and can also help any teen with their individual job search—helping to complete online applications, practicing interview questions, or developing a resume.

If you cant make it in during lunch, but still want some assistance, you can email Ken Bowers to schedule an appointment at a different time.

The Commission on Immigrant Rights & Citizenship (CIRC), a City department, addresses the needs of Cambridge’s immigrant community in identifying, accessing and obtaining City and local resources, including legal services. Reach out to CIRC through our website. CIRC, in collaboration with CLSACC, offers a free monthly immigration legal screening clinic on the third Wednesdays of every month, from 5:15 – 7:15PM at CLSACC’s office, located at 47 Thorndike Street in East Cambridge.
