George O'Connor

Fans of Greek Mythology
What an incredible morning at the Cambridge Public Library, thanks to our librarian, Ms. Kugel! Ms. Kugel arranged for our 4th grade students to meet a phenomenal author/illustrator, George O'Connor. George has a very popular series of books about Greek mythology, The Olympians. Read on >>

High Fives

High 5s
High 5s started in early December. Every week, classroom teachers submit the name of a student in the classroom that exemplifies one of the Baldwin core values - Community, Care, Effort, Joy, Growth. Mr. Roderick and Ms. Heidi acknowledge the students during lunch period with each student receiving a certificate recognizing their efforts. In addition, each child receives two Baldwin bracelet, one to keep, and one to pass along to a friend. View Examples of the High 5's >>

Habitats

Showcases of Learning: Kindergarten Animals and Habitats
Kindergarten students in room 104 presented their learning on their unit of Animals and Habitats for their families. Children are naturally drawn to learning about animals and during this unit they put their curiosity to work through creative exploration. This theme-based learning shows off their reading, writing, art and scientific skills. Their beautiful dioramas depict owls and wolves. Their artwork and sketch books are filled with their explorations. Students dissected owl pellets. A slide show of students at work in their classroom was on display for all to enjoy.

Crayons

Discovering Justice and 100th Day Celebration

Students in Ms. Moylans's first grade class celebrated the start of Black History month by creating some amazing posters and learned and recited a beautiful poem by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for their families. Dr. King believed in the power of love and we celebrate him every year to thank him for the risks he took for the freedoms we have today.

In addition, they showed off their 100th day collections as did many classrooms making crowns, glasses, 100 ways to make 100 and more.

STEM

STEM Club News: Baldwin in Flight and Motion
During the last month, the students of STEM Club learned about things that fly: flying squirrels, people in wingsuits, ultralight gliders, helicopters and rockets. They then made their own flying objects including hoop gliders, airplanes and helicopters. They learned about the four forces involved: thrust, drag, lift and weight. Read more >>

STEM Fest --- March 14
Our incredible parent-run STEM Club has sponsored a STEM Fair in years past. This year, we will have a day of STEM, during the school day. The date is March 14. Shifting the STEM fair into the school day will increase student access. The STEM Club parents and Ms. Heidi have worked hard to plan an incredible day that starts with a STEM Fest kick off meeting and then programming for each grade level that will include a presentation and then a hands-on STEM activity. Volunteers will be needed for STEM Fest in every classroom. Once the schedule for the day is finalized, there will be a call for volunteers. Please be on the lookout for an email looking for classroom volunteers to support the hand-on activity. These activities will last about 90 minutes. We're looking forward to having you come join the fun!

Thank you to the STEM Club parents and thank you to Friends of Baldwin for supporting this awesome STEM day.

Bobby

Remembering Bobby Scott
Forever the Unsung Hero of Baldwin
Beloved Baldwin School cook Robert (Bobby) Scott passed away on February 3. Bobby cooked for the Baldwin students for 15 years and was a cook in the school district for 22 years. Bobby was the light, the energy, and the vivacity of the kitchen. Everyday, the kitchen was filled with laughter because of Bobby's fun-loving spirit. Bobby had a wonderful sense of humor and he loved making everyone laugh. His smile was infectious. What our staff and students loved about him was his passion and unique style. Bobby was truly the unsung hero of the Baldwin School for many, many years. Read on >>

Playworks

Playworks Junior Coaches
As you may have read in previous newsletters, 4th and 5th grade students are junior coaches at recess for younger grades as part of the Playworks program. Students learn about problem solving, conflict resolution and reinforcing "being good to each other". The junior coaches were asked about their experience. They said they really like it, they like being a role model for younger students, and "I probably shouldn't say this, but it gets me out of some class time." They really like working with the younger students saying it is so much fun. A new crew of junior coaches are being trained, allowing more 4th and 5th graders to experience this mentoring opportunity. Read more >>

Leonard

Ms. Leonard Wheels Her Way to School
As part of National School Breakfast Week, the Cambridge Food and Nutrition Services asked each school to find a staff member who loves cycling to feature on a trading card. Meet the Baldwin School featured staff member, Christine Leonard.
I am an occupational therapist at the Baldwin School.
My favorite breakfast is oatmeal with bananas and peanut butter.

I started bicycling to work as a way to make my commute more sustainable, but have since discovered there are so many ways cycling benefits me. I save money, I get fresh air and exercise that set the tone for my day, and I never, ever sit in traffic jams. I love commuting to work by bike!

Heidi

Principal Corner
As a school we are always thinking about how to increase the positive behaviors we see at Baldwin and how we can work to discourage negative behaviors that don’t align with our schoolwide expectations.

We are working really hard and we hope you see evidence of this. Read some of the things we have done >>

Outdoor Recess
We do try very hard to give kids outside time every day and we want you to send kids to school ready for the weather. However the following condition will result in indoor recess options:

  • Temps/Wind Chills below 20 (especially when it's windy/cloudy)
  • Precipitation that will saturate outwear over the course of the recess
  • Unsafe playground conditions (like large patches of ice) that can't be solved before recess starts (although we always try!)

Here are a few things we do for indoor recess:

  • If the gym is available, we give kids time to run around the gym
  • Teachers lead group games and also have small group game options in the classrooms
  • Movement breaks in the classroom

Community Conversations
All are welcome to join a series of community meetings that will take place at Rindge Avenue Upper School for the North Cambridge community, including the Baldwin community. These sessions are designed to talk about issues around racial equity, racial bias in education, racial identity, and more. Each session builds on the previous, so you are urged to try to attend as many as possible.

Sessions take place at 70 Rindge Avenue from 5:30 - 8PM with dinner provided and childcare for ages 3 and older. If you have any questions, please contact Tina Lieu.

February 26: A role-play that will demonstrate the tools and techniques to “have the conversation”. This process will show how we can challenge our own beliefs to better connect with other members of our community. Dialogue: Empathy and Trust

FEBRUARY VACATION ACTIVITIES
Check out what is happening during February School Vacation in the community.

Beautiful Morning

OH, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING
Thank you to our amazing music teacher Ms. Jene Song, our school community enjoyed a joyous, musical morning. Students in grades JK - 2 performed a beautiful concert featuring songs of winter. Thank you to all the families who came to hear our young singers.

GARDEN UPDATE
Classes have been busy with garden lessons indoors and outdoors! The Baldwin worm bin has been making its way around the school, with classes observing them up close and learning about how they enrich the soil. Other classes have sprouted garlic in windowsills to observe the roots, stem, and leaves start as they quickly develop. Spring is around the corner! (if you walk really slowly).

SUPPORTING EARLY LEARNING
Thank you to Summer Thompson and Jayne Lynch for hosting a workshop for parents prior to the JK - 2 concert. For those who missed their presentation, read what they went over >>
