What's Happening this Month at KLO

We just passed the 100th day of school putting us well over the half way mark! When we return from February break we will start looking forward to spring (even though the winter will still be lingering). This month brought many creative celebrations of the 100th Day and Black History. A lot of learning is happening!

MLK
4th Grade
Fourth graders are learning about non-violent resistance and the understanding that their voices matter. Through exploring how protesters worked together, formed alliances, and made change throughout the Civil Rights Movement, students will begin to explore modern, peaceful, non-violent resistance.

MLK
Letters to Dr. King
First graders in 101 wrote letters to Martin Luther King.

Feb 2019
Justice Journals
In grade 1 Social Studies we’re reading and writing about brave people (and children) who advocate for justice. These are our Justice Journals! We have also been learning about Martin Luther King.

100 Days
100th Day
The 110th day of school is a big deal in elementary school! It offers a lot of opportunities for counting and grouping. These first graders from room 111 enjoyed a special snack - they had to make groups of ten from a variety of ten different snacks to equal one hundred. They had a blast!

Help Plan International Night
There are so many aspects of culture and we want to celebrate them! Instead of doing an International Potluck paired with an Academic Showcase, we are doing a whole International Night! We want to add crafts, stories, information about countries, even songs and dance! It’s a big undertaking, though, and we need your help to pull it off. We will be having a planning meeting at 8:45AM on Feburary 27th. Please join us then or contact Nancy Wyse ([email protected] or 617.349.4865) if you have something you’d like to share for the night!

Get Ready for Ballroom Dancing!
Each year every 5th grader in Cambridge learns to ballroom dance. CPS employs professionals to come teach the kids a variety of dances, including the waltz and the tango! At someBallroom point in March or April there will be a showcase at CRLS for K-Lo 5th graders as well as 5th graders from 5 other Cambridge elementary schools. The kids dress up and show off their skills. It’s awesome! Keep an eye out for the Ballroom Showcase date.

JK Community Partner
The East Cambridge Savings Bank came to celebrate the 100th day of school with Ms. Patterson’s junior kindergartners. They brought in with them 100 pennies, 100 one dollar bills, and 1 one hundred dollar bill to share with the children and then they gave each child a one dollar bill. They were impressed by how much the students already knew about the number 100 and money. They were touched by how kind and polite the students were and how well they stay engaged throughout their visit.

Friends of K-Lo
The Friends of K-Lo would like to thank everyone who has donated this year...the donations from families have totaled over $700! These funds, along with corporate giving from businesses such as the Cambridgeside Galleria, are going towards author visits, camp scholarships, and field trips. Thanks everyone!

At the beginning of this school year, the Friend of K-Lo gave each teacher a stipend of $50 to spend on teaching supplies. Our Technology teacher bought a replacement part for the 3D printer, our Art teacher bought paint...teachers have a lot of expenses! Ask your child’s teacher what he/she spent the money on.
BoxTops
We are about to redeem our Box Tops so if you have some at home please bring them into school. You can also tape dimes to the Box Top collection sheets.

CitySprouts Garden News
Classes have been busy with garden lessons indoors and outdoors! Ms. Murphy's class has been peeking inside the hoop house. It's looking green! Ms. Comeau's class were wonderful caretakers to our KLo worms. Ms. Barros' class is growing garlic on their windowsill. Ms. Tzikas' class was out in the cold making a map of the garden so that we can start planning our spring planting! They'll be tracing the shade at different times of the day next month. Spring is around the corner! (if you walk really slowly). After February break, classes will start sowing seeds in trays in windowsills, so that we can transplant them come spring. Visit the garden to see Brussels sprouts, kale and radishes.

Lunar Year
Art Celebrate the Lunar New Year
After a week of work, and participation from each grade, we finished our Rainbow Dragon in honor of the lunar new year! We hope she brings us good luck.

2nd Grade News
Second graders just completed their People and Places project that incorporated non-fiction reading and writing, pot luck science, and social studies. Through their project they learned about the Earth's surface, each of the seven continents, and how people around the world have many differences but also many similarities. Students completed their own "This is Me" writing where they examined their own traditions.
In Room 204, second graders were also able to learn a lot from their classmates and their families- we had seven different presentations from family members to learn about El Salvador, Mexico, Korea, England, Nepal, Pakistan, and Poland! Room 204 celebrated with their families at a special potluck dinner where the class got to share their hard work and enjoy delicious homemade food that are special to their friends and teachers.
