New Friends
Welcome New
Friends!New Friends

Our new friends and families came to the school yesterday for their first visit to the school! They were greeted in the auditorium by the 5th grade band who played a number of selections for our guests. Miss Jaime then welcomed everyone and introduced several members of the staff. The families were invited to go to a classroom where our kindergarten students showed the students around the room. It looked like everyone was enjoying themselves!

Literacy Event Focused on
Phonemic Awareness

Dear Parents/Guardians of Children’s House: The interns from Harvard Graduate School of Education invite you to participate in a Literacy Event focused on Phonemic Awareness. Phonemic awareness is when children can hear and play with individual sounds in words and it is an essential skill in learning how to read! All Children’s House parents are welcome to attend and learn more about the importance of phonemic awareness and how to help their children develop these skills. During the session, you will gain concrete skills and knowledge and also learn about fun activities and games you can play with your children at home!

Date: April 3
Time: 8-9AM

Room 283 Students Are Learning
About Measuring
Measure
Room 283 students have started a unit on measurement. They have been learning how to understand measurable attributes of objects and use standard and nonstandard units to measure. Do you know that you can use any object as a nonstandard unit to measure your height, the length of your arm, the width of your favorite book, etc.? We use Montessori materials for nonstandard measurement, and all the Kindergartners enjoyed an exciting measurement hunt at Tobin.

The Kindergartners have created How Tall Are You chart that can be found next to the classroom entrance. Stop by and measure your height! Another chart What Is Your Weight helps the students understand the concepts of charts and graphs.

Above: Omar is waiting patiently while Noah is measuring his height. Narain is working with a primary balance to explore weight. Natan is using nonstandard units to measure length.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER BY MISTER ROGERS

It's true that we take a great deal of our own upbringing on into our adult lives and our lives as parents; but it's true, too, that we can change some of the things that we would like to change. It can be hard, but it can be done.
