Harvard
Harvard Intern Parent Ed Session

You may have heard of "phonics" before, but do you know what "phonemic awareness" means and how important it is to reading development? Children's House families had the opportunity to learn all about it this week from our threeHarvard reading specialist interns from the Harvard Graduate School of Education! Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken language. For example - say the word "bat". Now say the word "bat" without saying /b/. Can you do it? Did you say "at"? If you did, you were using your phonemic awareness skills to identify, separate and manipulate the sounds in the word. These abilities are a very important foundation to reading and writing. After learning about what phonemic awareness is, and why it is important, families explored stations where they discovered many fun activities to play with individual sounds, syllables, and rhyming words. Having fun with sounds and language can help prepare your child for a lifetime of joyful experiences with reading and writing!

Ancient Civ Winner
Ancient Civilization Projects
By: Lucy Carter

Ancient civilizations was a project that the whole Upper Elementary worked hard for eight weeks on. Ancient Greece, Egypt, Maya, Mesopotamia, and Rome were the civilizations Upper Elementary (UE) researched. The project included researching questions you were given about your civilizations, creating a news article based on the topic of your choice, and doing a creative project. All the UE´s work is currently on display on the top of the ramp.

Every Tuesday during those eight weeks Upper Elementary students met with their group and team leader. Everyone worked together in their group and helped their fellow students when needed. Every student was put in a different group and only researched about their civilization, because all the students were in separate groups we presented what we learned to our fellow students.

How it worked was three groups presented at a time in different rooms, the other three groups had fifteen minutes in each room then rotated to the next room. After everyone rotated through each room the presenters get presented to by the students who were just presented to.

UE students enjoyed Ancient Civilization projects and learned a lot about different civilizations.

Upper El Trip to The Boston Symphony Orchestra
By Sarah Curtis

This year the Upper El students went on a field trip to see the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It was a beautiful building. We got to meet one of the performers ,his name was Richard hePerformer showed us his Bassoon. He told us that we have to practice every day, for years and years. He told us that he has been practicing every day since he was ten, That's Almost 47 years he has been practicing every day. He told us that performers at the orchestra practice the songs over and over until they are perfect. The show was amazing, all of the instruments worked together to make a lot of beautiful pieces.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER BY MISTER ROGERS

In the giving of help, a parent experiences one of the best feelings that any of us can have: that life life has meaning because we are needed by someone else. Watching a baby grow with our help tells us other things we like to feel about ourselves: that we are competent and loving. In the giving of help, a parent experiences one of the best feelings that any of us can have: that life life has meaning because we are needed by someone else.
