Cafe Night- Calling All Spoken Artists!
Thursday, April 11, 2019 is our seventh annual RAUC Cafe Night from 5:30-6:30PM in the cafeteria
. It's a night for RAUC scholars to express themselves creatively through the arts like, poetry and music. Come see our cafeteria transformed into a beautiful cafe like vibe where the scholars will perform. Refreshments will be provided by FRAUC at a low cost. Anyone interested in performing should contact Mr. DeWitte or Ms. Gonzalez before April 11th! There is also a sign up sheet by Mr. DeWitte’s door.

Reminder of April 12 is the Deadline
for Visual and Performing Arts Course Requests

Rising 7th and 8th graders have until this Friday to turn in any requests to shift their music path or, for rising 8th graders, request an art or drama elective. Students have been given the forms; they can also be found here (Rising 7th; Rising 8th). They must be signed by a caregiver. We can’t guarantee we can accommodate everyone’s first choice, but we will do our best. Please reach out to your student’s music teacher if you have any questions.

MCAS Starts this Week with 6th Grade ELA Testing
Please see the schedule below for all RAUC MCAS testing days:
MCAS
What you can do to support your student during MCAS:
  • Remind your student to think positively and stay calm and just do their best! MCAS at this point is one piece of information on how they are doing in relation to what the state of Massachusetts is asking schools to teach students. Their scores do not count for a grade. Their teachers will use their scores to help plan for how to teach them better next year.
  • Encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep the day before testing and to eat a full and healthy breakfast on the morning of testing to ensure that they are at their best.
  • Remind them that worrying gets in the way of their brain working in its best ways--and that there are things they can do when they realize they are feeling worried. Here are some that you might review with your student if you notice they are feeling anxious:
    • Belly breathing. Push your stomach out when you breathe in. This gives you more air which helps your brain.
    • Ground your feet! Notice the sensation of your feet on the floor. Imagine tree roots from your feet into the floor.
    • RESET! You can create a new beginning at any moment of the test process! Look out the window at something in nature: Clouds, trees, sky, then quickly begin again.

RAUC Girls Basketball are City Champs!
Last Wednesday the girls defeated CSUS to win the upper school basketball tournament. They started a bit slowly but soon found their stride and ended strong! They were cheered on by a great showing of RAUC students, staff, and families. RAUC-on!

All City Spring Concert Wednesday
April 10
A number of RAUC band, orchestra and chorus students are in this impressive performance happening at 7pm in the CRLS auditorium. Our very own strings teacher, Brittany Phillips, conducts. Come enjoy and celebrate their musical accomplishments!

Third Quarter Progress Reports Out Friday
As noted in last week’s newsletter, the third quarter has ended. Progress reports will be available on Aspen on Friday, 4/12. You will receive notification. Reports will be mailed to families without internet access. If you have not received them by the time we return from April break, please reach out to Taraneh Ahmadi (617.349.4060 x2041) or Shanika Boadu ([email protected]).

Tips from RAUC Alumni About Teens
and Social Media
If you missed the Speaker Series event last week, you missed out! A panel of five 9th and 10th grade former RAUC students shared their wisdom about how families can help their middle schoolers navigate smartphones and social media:
  • Kids who are busy with activities they enjoy are less likely to "get sucked into their phone." All panelists agreed they prefer to spend time in person with their friends, or involved with clubs and sports.
  • Be firm about basic rules: homework first; put your phone away when you're visiting family; leave it outside your bedroom at night. For younger middle schoolers, use parental controls to limit the time they spend on certain apps, or try something simpler like a smart watch.
  • Buy a "big embarrassing case that won't break if you drop it down the stairs," and expect your child to share some financial responsibility.
  • Give kids freedom and privacy, unless you see "red flags." One panelist noted that, "Kids whose parents monitor every little thing? Those kids become really good liars."
I know I learned a lot from these young people! If you'd like to discuss these issues more, I'm always happy to: Sam Musher, Library Technology Specialist, [email protected].

Courageous Conversations
Session 3 Tomorrow
Please join us on Tuesday April 9 for the third session of Courageous Conversations at 5:30PM for dinner and from 6-8 PM for the discussion & childcare. Meet us in the Peabody/RAUC Library. We will continue exploring the "Hidden Message: Triad Model" and how it can inform our communication. We will also continue presenting normative data, this week focusing on economics and begin the "Socrates Cafe" model to more deeply engage as a community. Those who attended CC2 will have time to complete scenarios. Missed CC2? No problem! Please come; we are prepared to get you caught up quickly. Do remind your friends among the family, school, and community of RAUC, Baldwin, and Peabody to come!

Save these dates:
  • Session 4: Tuesday, April 23 (week after spring break)
  • Session 5: Tuesday, May 28 (day after Memorial Day)
Questions? Email [email protected].

Lost and Found
RAUC’s Lost and Found closet is bursting at the seams. Students are requested to come by the office and ask to take a look for things they may have lost. Unclaimed items will all be donated to the community bin by April break.
