Celebration of the Arts and Talent Show!

On Thursday, March 28th we gathered at the West Cambridge Youth Center and celebrated all of our students' artistic talents! Every student had at least one piece of art from art class - thanks to art teacher Laurie Gaines and all the parents who helped mount and hang them, in particular Carroll Magill! We were also treated to a talent show by our willing 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. There were 20 diverse acts - including singing, pogo-sticking, karate board breaking, musical instruments, comedy, rubik's cube and DJing! Thanks to all the staff members who helped our students shine on stage: Kerri Favreau, Jessica Joseph, Jolene Stewart, Elise Faucher, Katie Nole and Lissa Galluccio.

April is Poetry Month!

fohAuthor Traci Sorell Visited
The word otsaliheliga (oh-jah-LEE-hay-le-gah) is used by members of the Cherokee Nation to express gratitude. Cherokee Nation author Traci Sorell met with Haggerty third and fourth graders to share her picture book, We Are Grateful - Otsaliheliga. This book shares a look into contemporary life of the Cherokee people. She wants her son and other Native American children to have picture books that are mirrors for them. Ask your third or fourth grader about the visit.

Kindergarten is Reading Some of the Schneider Family Book Awards
The award “honors an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.” During our library lessons, we talked about how we all have things that are difficult for us but some children have even bigger challenges. This web activity shows us sharing and talking about how friends help each other every day.

fohSchool House Rock Live Performs!
On March 21, Haggerty welcomed Moonbox Productions to perform Schoolhouse Rock Live! Students and teachers alike loved and recognized the music - from "I'm Just a Bill" to "Interjections," "Three is a Magic Number," and of course, "Conjunction Junction." Audience participation was welcomed - students answered questions, danced and sang along with the performers. Thanks to FOH for funding this enriching performance!

Coaches Corner
From the Literacy Coach, Suzanne Russell

It’s April and that means that we can predict a lot about things that are happening at Haggerty. If it’s April, it’s National Poetry Month, that means lots of kids at Haggerty are reading and writing poems. It also means that lots of kids are thinking about the topics they know a lot about, several classes will host Expert Fairs later this month. Students are preparing Non-Fiction books and presentations to share with their families. Please stay tuned for dates for upcoming Expert Fairs. Be prepared to learn a lot about: BeyBlades, Being a Sibling, Soccer, Gymnastics, Coding, Singing, Human Rights, and much more. Please stay tuned for dates for upcoming Expert Fairs.

If it’s April, it’s also testing season. Please help us to support your third through fifth graders. While we want all children to do their very best in all of their school work, we don’t want our students to experience extreme stress about this annual exam. Teachers in grades 3-5 have been preparing students for the test by showing students a variety of test selections and released items from previous school years. The MCAS exam is a computer based assessment. This means all students in grades 3-5 will use a chromebook for the test, they will select answers through multiple choice questions and they will type their written responses. Students have had several opportunities to practice for the test using Chromebooks. Teachers are providing students with strategies and supports to ease their stress and develop preparedness for the exams.

English Language Arts (ELA) tests will take place the last week in April and first week in May.
Grade 3 ELA on April 24, April 25;
Grade 4 & 5, April 29 and May 1
Math: Grade 3 May 7, 8; Grade 4 & 5 May 14, 16th.

If you are interested in reviewing the test formats, you can use the following link to see examples of the practice tests in both ELA and Math. Practice tests >>

We Want to Hear from You!
CPS is pleased to launch our 2019 Family Survey. The purpose of this survey is to learn about the experiences of families in our schools and district. It is important to us that all families feel welcomed, and that all students receive the best possible education.

As a district committed to equity, we use survey results to understand whether students and families from all backgrounds are having positive experiences in our schools. Your answers will be completely anonymous and can not be connected to you.

NOTES ABOUT ARRIVAL INTO CLASSROOMS
The Haggerty Staff is asking to remind families and caregivers to not interrupt classrooms after 7:55AM. If you’re late, please sign-in in the office and someone will come for your child or an office staff person will bring them to the classroom. It’s too disruptive and distracting to our youngest learners to have parents and guardians in the classrooms after 7:55AM. Someone in the classroom will read the morning message in your child’s classroom! If you need to bring something in (Lunch, sneakers, etc) the office staff will deliver it! Thanks for your help with this!?

RACE MATTERS: COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS AT THE HAGGERTY
This past Thursday night, Race Matters: Courageous Conversations met on the subject of "Talking to Children about Race." It started with an overview of why it is important to have these conversations with children early and often. As a group, we then worked on both reactive and proactive strategies for answering children's questions about race and racism. The conversations were insightful, and thoughtful. We would like to thank everyone who came out to join us. If you were unable to attend, and are interested in links to any of the resources used, please email Rochele at [email protected]. ~Rochele, Jen & Meredith
