HSEP invites CPS Upper School Families to an Open House
Wednesday, May 15th | 5-7PM
An opportunity for families to meet faculty, tour our classrooms, see student work and hear about the changes happening at HSEP.

After High School

What happens after high school?

Guidance Counselor, Ms. Ferraro and Mr. Gibson invited HSEP graduates, Josh Brymer, graduating class of 2018 and Iris Contreras, graduating class of 2012, to speak to students on their experiences post high school. Iris is a Clerk at the Kennedy-Longfellow School. Josh is a participant of Next Up, a program for Cambridge residents up to age 25 with a high school diploma or equivalent, who are not enrolled in college. 

Bio Cells

Biology Cell Models
Students in Ms. Robb’s biology class researched a specific type of specialized cell in the human body. They discovered how cellular structure influences function and created three dimensional models of the cell to present to their peers and staff. Student, Dania Feraud presents on hepatocytes, cells of the liver, above.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop X Conference at Harvard Graduate School of Education
Mr. Gibson and student Martin Bonder presented at the third annual Hip Hop Conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Education as a part of HipHopEX, a collaboration that brings together high school and graduate students to explore and experiment with Hip Hop as a powerful culture and educational tool. The conference, titled "Can’t Stop Hip Hop! The Education Movement," brought together Hip Hop educators, artists, and enthusiasts of ALL ages in a day of collaboration, learning, and fun!

Friends and Family Appreciation Dinner
HSEP hosted our annual Friends and Family appreciation dinner on April 9th, a fun night had by all! 

Financial Analyst Visits

Financial Analyst Bobby Barnes
Visits HSEP

Mr. Pierce’s Business Math class welcomed guest speaker, financial analyst Bobby Barnes. Mr. Barnes spoke on the importance of investing, the power of compound interest, why young people should be encouraged to open an IRA, and his passion for the stock market. Students are currently competing in a stock market game with hundreds of other students in the region. Mr. Barnes was able to provide professional insights and advice for students playing in the game!

Art

Young Artists: Artwork by Cambridge Public School Students
HSEP students, Connor Bresnahan, Iris Perez-Cepeda, Shante Tibbs, and Darianna Ramirez-Frias all had pieces of art showcased at Young Artists: Artwork by Cambridge Public School Students, an exhibit featuring artwork from Cambridge artists in grades K-12. Shante Tibbs and Connor Bresnahan’s work can be seen above.


Deconstructing Stigma

A Parent Workshop on Teens and Mental Health
May 2 | 6 - 7:30PM

One in five young adults aged 13-18 experience mental illness. Told through the eyes of its participants, Deconstructing Stigma boldly tears down the misconceptions of what those with mental illness look like. From this positive and interactive presentation, participants will learn firsthand some of the common signs and symptoms, including depression and anxiety, and how to talk to your child. More information on the Deconstructing Stigma Campaign >>

April is School Library Month
School Library Month is AASL's celebration of school librarians and their programs. The 2019 theme is Everyone Belongs @ Your School Library and the 2019 spokesperson is Dav Pilkey. Visit the AASL website to view and share a video from Dav on the importance of school libraries and reading, register for complimentary webinars, and download free resources - and check back often for more to come!

Resources: Young People & Substance Abuse
The CPS Health & Physical Education Department develops curricula and supports programs aimed at teaching students to make healthy decisions and understand themselves physically, socially and emotionally. Mayor's Summer Youth Program
Application Deadline: May 3, 2019
MSYEP is a six-week summer job program for Cambridge residents who will be 14 as of July 1, 2019. You are eligible to participate until and including the summer following your high school graduation. Youth who would miss more than 5 working days between July 1 and August 9 are not eligible to participate. You must be authorized to work in the U.S. View the application >>

Audible Summer Workshop for High School Students
Build engineering skills and get a head start on
your career in tech! Audible is seeking 8 to 10 high school rising juniors and seniors who are interested in a career in technology to participate in a three-week computer science-focused program. Learn directly from Audible engineers working on industry leading technologies. Be immersed in a professional computer science environment. Bio-Engineering and Water Engineering Programs
Application Deadline: April 30, 2019
This Summer Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is running a bio-engineering program as well as a water engineering program from July 8 – 19, 2019. Both programs are free and we are targeting local MA high school students (must be 16 years or older) who have a great interest in these fields. Students will be responsible for their lunch and transportation to and from Harvard. Both programs are open to all but we strongly encourage students in underrepresented background in the STEM field, first generation students, and low-income students to apply!

Does Your Student Need Help Quitting Vaping? 
Truth Initiative recently launched a first-of-its-kind free e-cigarette quit program now available to young vapers looking for help. The program is tailored by age group to give appropriate recommendations about quitting and also serves as a resource for parents looking to help their children who now vape. It is being launched and integrated into the already successful This is Quitting (app) and BecomeAnEX® digital cessation programs from Truth Initiative.
