April Rain Song
By Langston Hughes

Let the rain kiss you.
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.

The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk.
The rain makes running pools in the gutter.
The rain plays a little sleep-song on our roof at night—

And I love the rain.

Independent Research is a Hallmark of the Montessori Classroom

Maria Montessori knew that Lower Elementary age students are filled with questions and a lot of motivation to find out answers. In room 206 students are encouraged to choose a topic of interest. They are led through the various steps to plan and conduct the research, take notes, have their work edited, publish their final report and then create a project that helps explain their topic. These research projects begin anytime during the year and may take weeks to months to complete. The final step is a well anticipated presentation to the class - sharing what they learned with their peers.

Spring Tea Ceremony
Mary Frawley, our parent/family liaison, generously volunteered her time and effort to bake with the children of room 284 in preparation of our Spring Tea Ceremony. She worked with small groups of children. Children absolutely enjoyed their time with her. They learned many special skills needed for baking such as measuring the ingredients, mixing, stirring and smelling. They can’t wait to try those special treats on the special day.

Harvard ExperiMentors in Room 283

The Slime Experiment:
William Ho and Ryan Turner, students at Harvard, visited Room 283 as a part of the Harvard ExperiMentors program. Recently, they performed the "slime" experiment with the class, where the students made slime from glue, starch, and water. Making slime is a fascinating chemistry demonstration, and slime is a term that scientists use. Young scientists in Room 283 enjoyed making slime and playing with it.

Annual Singing Festival
The Visual and Performing Arts Department is holding its 1st Annual Singing Festival for students in grades 3-5. The Festival will take place on May 29th at 6:30PM at CRLS. This is an exciting opportunity to join your friends from other Cambridge schools in song. If you are in third, fourth or fifth grade and interested in participating, please let Mr. Reynolds know by Friday, April 12th. His email is: [email protected]

City Nature Challenge
Participate as a family in three City Nature Challenge events Saturday (at Fresh Pond), Sunday (at Clement Morgan Park) and Monday (also at Clement Morgan Park) —have fun together exploring nature in the city and making art!

You can participate in the community science documentation of living things in our city during the 4-day City Nature Challenge on your own, or at one of the events on the attached flyer. More information about the Boston Area City Nature Challenge is here: https://www.zoonewengland.org/citynaturechallenge.

Why is this such a great event? Because ordinary people all over the world will be also documenting living things Friday through Monday; you can see all the data online on iNaturalist.org, and know that you are contributing to a global biodiversity database.

Screen-Free Week is starting up on April 29th as well, so families who want to participate in the City Nature Challenge without using the global citizen science platform iNaturalist (a free app and web site), should know there won’t be any smartphones or other technology used during the second hour of the last event, 4:00-5:00PM, on Monday, April 29th. We’ll be observing nature in Clement Morgan Park and making models of beetles. Those art options are available on Sunday from 1:00-3:00PM as well.

go green challenge
Go Green Challenge!
Do you like to recycle? Reuse? Do you turn out lights when you leave the room and bring your own bag to the store? Every “green” action you take makes a difference. Thank you! Elementary classrooms are joining in the Go Green Challenge by completing a worksheet sharing ways they help the environment (check it out here). We also made a Go Green at Home Challenge that you might like to do together outside of school! Learn more >>

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER BY MISTER ROGERS

If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.
