King Open Celebrates Autism Acceptance!

xavier readingIn April, King Open celebrated Autism Acceptance. We kicked off the celebration with the “Light It Up Blue” event at City Hall. This is King Open's 4th year participating in this event. This year, members of the community met at the school prior to the event to color puzzle pieces, eat pizza, and walk to City Hall together. At City Hall there were speeches from the mayor and other City Council members. Multiple CPS students spoke, as well as Xavier Caban, a 2nd grade student from King Open! Xavier shared what having autism means to him. Go Xavier!

puzzle piecesKing Open honored Autism Acceptance month during the week of April 20th-25th. During this week, all students designed puzzle pieces of how to show empathy and acceptance to people with differences. The puzzle pieces now hang all together in the cafeteria. Each classroom held classroom discussions and read alouds and showed videos about autism – and every morning students shared a fact over the morning announcements.

neuro-diversityTo end the month's celebration, we held a whole school community meeting. During this meeting, the students learned some of the characteristics of autism and what it means to be neuro-diverse. We shared the stories of Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old climate activist from Sweden who is diagnosed with autism and Johnny Almeda, a non-verbal autistic man who finished this year's Boston Marathon in 3 hours and 17 minutes. The 4th graders had a vocal performance of This is Me, Xavier Caban spoke once again, and everyone participated in a whole school movement break!

Go Green Challenge!
Do you like to recycle? Reuse? Do you turn out lights when you leave the room and bring your own bag to the store? Every “green” action you take makes a difference. Thank you! Elementary classrooms are joining in the Go Green Challenge by completing a worksheet sharing ways they help the environment (check it out here). We also made a Go Green at Home Challenge that you might like to do together outside of school! Learn more >>
