And walked the trails learning about and looking for land and water forms. The 3rd years visited the observatory to learn more about weather tracking and data collection.

Mock Trial
Room 283 Mock Trial: Goldilocks and The Three Bears
Yin Zhou, Lela's mother, came to Room 283 on Friday, May 10 to share what she has been doing as a lawyer. Yin says, "Children are natural negotiators and advocates and have a strong sense of fairness, even at a very young age, and I think they would have fun pretending to be lawyers, judges, and jurors."

Yin coached the children through a mock trial and showed them how rules / laws / agreements affect our daily lives. As a starting point, we used Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Every student had a role: there were the Bear family and its lawyers, Goldilocks and her lawyers, two prosecutors, a judge, and numerous members of a jury. During the trial, Goldilocks had to fire her lawyers because they didn’t present valuable arguments to defend her, and two other defendants did a very good job representing her.

Trial
Initially, Yin and the students established laws, for example, breaking and entering someone’s else’s house is bad, and breaking other people’s things is bad as well, accidents are OK, etc. Then the Bear family and its lawyers decided on two types of trial, a criminal trial to put Goldilocks in jail and a civil trial to decide if Goldilocks should make up for what she had done in the bears’ house. Prosecutors presented a strong case, plaintiffs explained why Goldilocks should be punished, and defendants argued in her defense. The jury deliberated for a long time, and here is their verdict: Goldilocks should pay $100 for the damages but still go to jail. Oren W., as a strict judge, confirmed the verdict.

Mock trial in Room 283 was a very successful event! Room 283 students learned about practicing law and effectively speaking up for other people. We would like to thank Yin for sharing her time and expertise with us.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER BY MISTER ROGERS

I have always called talking about feelings "important talk." Knowing that our feelings are natural and normal for all of us can make it easier for us to share them with one another.
