COSEBOC
HSEP teacher, LeRoy Gibson and student, Antonio Garcia Benders, attended the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSEBOC) conference in Detroit, Michigan May 8th through 10th. COSEBOC’s mission is to connect, inspire, support, and strengthen school leaders dedicated to the social, emotional, and academic development of boys and young men of color. It was an amazing trip and for some attendees, it was their first time flying on an airplane!

AMC Mountain Classroom Field Trip
Organized by Mr. Pierce through a FOCRLS innovation grant, along with other HSEP staff members including Mr. Matson, Ms. Corcoran, Ashley Goodwin and six HSEP students, a group traveled to Russell, MA for two nights and three days to participate in the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Mountain Classroom. The Mountain Classroom engages teachers and students in environmental education, leadership development, and teambuilding. Students spent the trip hiking to waterfalls, preparing home-cooked meals, participating in leadership exercises, connecting with the outdoors (there were sightings of salamanders and frogs) and huddling around a bonfire roasting marshmallows and eating s’mores.

Cloth
Cloth Talk
HSEP’s Social Work intern, CRLS alum and super fashionable, Kadesha Turnbull, every week offers students Cloth Talk. Cloth Talk is an opportunity for students to learn how to sew, distress clothing and make fabulous one-of-a-kind, authentic fashion pieces while having meaningful conversations about issues and topics that impact the day-to-day lives of HSEP students.

Nutrition
Nutrition at HSEP
NutritionHelen Sarpong, a nutritionist has come to HSEP throughout the school year to educate our students on food health. Her last session with students focused on different kinds of fats and the importance of knowing the differences between good and healthy, saturated, and trans-fats. Students with Helen prepared salads with kale, feta and watermelon and practiced reading nutrition labels to strengthen their understanding of nutritional values. Throughout the year, with Helen, many students have been exposed to ingredients they have never had before.

Guest Speaker
Guest Speaker, Heather Sweeney,
Lahey Health

Mr. Gibson in conjunction with the Workforce Board, brought in Heather Sweeney, a representative from Lahey Health to speak to HSEP students about the various careers in Health Services. HSEP students asked many thoughtful questions and many, in the future, plan to pursue careers in the health field!

Luncheon
Senior Luncheon
Volunteerism at Mayor’s Senior Luncheon
HSEP students volunteered at the annual MIT Mayor’s Senior Luncheon. It was a great opportunity for our students to connect with the senior citizens of the community. Students helped with the food service, danced and made conversation with attendees. One student, studying Civil Rights in Mr. Matson’s US History class was able to connect with someone who had been a member of the Harlem chapter of the Black Panther Party. Another student, was able to speak in Haitian Creole with some of the senior guests. Overall, an extremely positive experience for HSEP students in community building.
