Field Tripping Fourth

Field tripFourth grade had their first field trip of the year! The students learned about the Pierce House in Dorchester, one of the oldest buildings in Boston. They learned about how scrapbooks are used to document history. Their guide, Amy, presented primary resources - pictures, journals, scrapbooks, and artifacts to learn more about the history of Boston and the Pierce Family.

The students rotated through two activities, silhouettes and scrapbooks. They created scrapbooks and silhouette portraits which they brought home. What does a student's favorite things say about them? Students then explored outside the building to see the changes over time in person. They enjoyed a picnic lunch at the house before heading back to school.

Harvard Crimson Reading Program

Students in grades 2 and 3 are taking part of the Harvard Crimson Reading Program this fall. Harvard Student Athletes are visiting each classroom to introduce the reading program, talk about the importance of actively reading, and read from some of their favorite childhood books.

The core values of the Harvard Crimson Reading Programs: principled leadership, academic integration, and competitive excellence. Their goal is to inspire the next generation of students to get excited about reading and offer them a first-hand look at what hard work and dedication in the classroom can lead to.

Annual Autumn Tradition

Cider PressWorking with Garden Coordinator Karl, students enjoyed a wonderful annual tradition: cider pressing. What a fun way to celebrate the fall harvest and outdoor learning. The students worked at different stations, washing, cutting, grinding and pressing apples. There is great anticipation as the students can't wait to try the cider as they watch it drip out of the press.

Describe the Perfect Popsicle

PopsicleChloe, Isabella's mom, came to to 5th grade to talk to the students about healthy choices and great ingredients to make the perfect homemade popsicle.

They talked about blending ingredients which will create a smooth liquid versus mashing which will have texture. The discussion included what fruits produce the most liquid which could make the best popsicles. What spices could you add for additional flavor? What fruits go go well together? After writing their best popsicle proposals, students will vote on the perfect popsicle. Thank you to Chloe for coming in to work with both 5th grade classrooms.

Friends of Baldwin News

Election Day is coming up. The Baldwin School is a polling site for the state election. Every year, the Friends of Baldwin hosts a food sale. Our neighborhood voters contribute to the Friends of Baldwin by purchasing treats, soups and chili provided by our families.

Parents and caregivers can help by volunteering to bake or bring in a crock pot of soup or chili, or volunteer to work a shift at the bake sale table (which is a great way to meet other parents). Information about how to help will be sent our soon.

All funds raised during the election day sale helps Friends of Baldwin fund enrichment activities like STEM Fest, Storytelling Night, Math Carnival, author visits and Poetry Night as well as to support grade level enrichments and provide subsidies and scholarships for overnight trips ensuring every Baldwin child can share in these experiences.

Next Friends of Baldwin Meeting: Tuesday, November 12 | 9AM
