Lauren Tarshis, Author of I Survived Book Series, Visits
Lauren Tarshis left an impression on Haggerty students (grades 2-5) on Wednesday, September 25th. Her highly successful I Survived series, has been a great series to launch reluctant readers and to provide readers with a first experience reading historical fiction. Ms. Tarshis spoke with students about her research on the Great Molasses Flood of Boston in 1919. She read the first chapter of the book to the older students, detailing how a wall of molasses 30’ high rushed out of the deteriorating tank that was housed in the middle of the North End of Boston. It took months to clean up, and the stench of molasses extended as far as Cambridge.

Danehy Day Thanks
Thanks to our wonderful community for coming together so early in the school year and supporting our efforts at this year's Danehy Family Day on September 14! Families contributed brownies, cookies, drinks, and their time to help make this day a big success.
Unfortunately, the skies opened up at 2PM, and the day ended a little early. We did our best to make the most of it! Donating leftover sandwiches to the Salvation Army.
We didn't make our financial goad this year, but sometimes mother nature dictates the day! At least the food did not go to waste.
We sincerely appreciate everyone's hard work. Thanks also for donations from Trader Joe's, Iggy's, and Fresh Pond Market!

Library Corner
By Sarah Novogrodsky
You are welcome to stop by and visit our beautiful library on the 4th floor of the building. Students visit the library once a week with their class for library lessons and book selection, although they are free to exchange books when their classroom schedule allows.
Our relationship with Belmont Books provides us with some amazing author visits. If you are in their store, please thank them.

Race Matters: Courageous Conversations
Wee the People - Thursday, November 7th - 6 - 7:30 PM
What is Racism?
Kids notice a LOT -- including skin color. They sense that it matters, and they have questions about how and why. Together we will explore how racism isn’t just one thing, but a system with many parts working together. Through activities, kids will learn how they can help disrupt and topple these systems. More info. This workshop is geared toward parents/caregivers and students together.
New this year Race matters will be sending out a monthly newsletter with anti-racist articles, books, and actions steps. e-mail [email protected] if you want to be added to our listserv.
