Back-to-School at HSEP
The first week of school was a busy one at HSEP! Students participated in various back-to-school activities including the tie-dying of t-shirts, STEM challenges, poster designs and concluded the week with a Potluck luncheon welcoming families.
There are many changes happening within at HSEP with our launch of grade specific Cohorts and Project-based learning curriculum. Students in Grades 11 & 12 have been placed in Cohorts H & S and will focus this year on real-world project-based learning. So far, students have investigated hostile design, designed miniature greenhouses, investigated people they admire and the qualities that define their success as well as set goals for their year and transition to adulthood. Students in grades 9 and 10 have been placed in Cohorts E & P and will focus on academic skill building and critical thinking skills. Students will regularly attend field trips, participate in community service monthly and will have personalized learning plans to support their successes academically and socially.

Shaping History
Cohort H, led by teacher, Amanda Robb, started their first project, "Shaping History". In this unit students were able to research different people who have changed history and analyze the character traits that allowed them to do so. Students then used this analysis to craft their own goals and character traits to develop this year. In working with our art teacher, students researched graphic design techniques and created digital posters for the goals they set. Students then presented their goals to students in other cohorts in a gallery walk presentation.

Real World Wednesday
This year HSEP students will have an early release day each Wednesday at 12Noon instead of our previous delayed opening. Upon their release from school, students will be provided with a task to complete by the following Wednesday tied to the learning they are doing about climate change or a task to prepare them for life as an adult in the Cambridge community. So far students have been tasked with obtaining a library card and checking out a book at the Cambridge Public Library, learning more about sustained success for businesses in Cambridge and finding an example of climate change policy within the Cambridge community.

Cambridge School Volunteers Tutoring
CSV Tutoring Center: One-to-One Tutoring Before and After School, Room 2407
Volunteers serve as one-to-one tutors and mentors twice a week with high school students of all levels and needs. Volunteers provide students with individual lesson plans to improve their skills and knowledge in particular subjects. Approximately 40% of the students speak a language other than English as their first language. The Tutoring Center is open before school from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. and after school from 2:45 to 3:45PM. Note: The first day of before and after school Tutoring Center will be September 23; the last day is June 12.
CSV Tutoring Center: Academic Support Classes, Room 2403
Students are assigned to the Tutoring Center during the school day for credit-bearing individualized academic support services, covering all subjects. CSV volunteers are matched to students singly or in small groups.
Drop-in Math Center, Room 2403
Volunteers help students on a walk-in basis with math problems ranging from pre-algebra to calculus, before school daily, between 7:30 and 8AM.
College/Career Mentoring Program
Volunteers help high school seniors, some of whom may be the first in their families to apply to college, by assisting with college, job readiness, and gap year program research; understanding and following through with all stages of the application process; and developing personal statements. In addition, volunteers help students identify scholarships and complete scholarship applications and essays. The program meets on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4:30PM. Note: The first day of service for the College and Career Mentor program (CCMP) is Wednesday, October 16, 2:30 - 4PM in the College and Career Resource Center, Room 1501.

Greenhouses
Cohort S Students, led by Dan Goldman, have been hard at work researching food production and food waste in their community. Students conducted field research and interviews at several locations to find where Cambridge businesses get their produce as well as how the quality and types of food available impact their local community.
Following the research, students began work exploring the concept of building a greenhouse, which uses trapped solar energy to create a stable environment for vegetation. In their early drafts, using creative thinking and teamwork, students constructed a miniature model as a proof of concept. Despite some minor setbacks, including a surprise spider living in the soil, students persevered to complete their model before working on a more fully realized blueprint and final product.
