Greetings from Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

Thank you for all you do to ensure that your student is getting to school on time each day. As we start our second full month of school, it is a good time to remember how important it is to have consistent, on-time attendance. Missing a day might not seem like much at the time, but it adds up to a lot of missed learning over the year. The same is true for coming just a few minutes late to school each day. The chart below can give you a sense of how this missed learning time adds up. If you find yourself struggling to get your student to school, please reach out to your student’s advisor or to Guidance Counselor Shanika Boadu ([email protected]) for support.

In partnership,

Julie Craven, Head of School

Social-Emotional Tip of the Week

Making mistakes is an important part of your student’s learning process. Sometimes this can be challenging, but each time a child has to work through a mistake they’ve made it allows them to move forward in their Social Emotional Learning. It can also be beneficial for them to hear of mistakes you have made, and how you have grown from them!

Courageous Conversations Group to Support CPSD's Building Equity Bridges

More details will be coming as we get closer, but please save the evenings of 10/30 and 11/13 (6-8pm discussion, 5:30pm dinner, childcare will be provided) in your calendar.

On 10/30 at Peabody/RAUC: The Building Equity Bridges team will present their barriers to equity document that is the culmination of 18 months of CPSD-sponsored data collection and analysis funded by the Nellie Mae Grant. This session will give families, school, and community time to digest and understand their conclusions.

On 11/13 at Baldwin School: Each school affinity group will delve deeper into the Barriers to Equity document and discusses what resonates for them as a school, what barriers do they feel are most relevant to them as a school to work on.

Spring 2020: Although still to be determined, we are already envisioning ways to continue conversations in the spring.

6th Grade Math Club Opportunity

This year, we are excited to offer Flagway to our Grade 6 students. Flagway is a game used by the Algebra Project and the Young People's Project (YPP) to create mathematically rich games and experiences for students. Flagway is a mix of math (the rules from this game are all derived from the Mobius function) and fitness (speed counts as students run through the Flagway course). Students who join Flagway will have opportunities to compete against the other Upper Schools in Cambridge and possibly attend the National Tournament. Flagway is offered after school on Thursdays and is open to all students, with priority given to students who historically are underrepresented in the STEM world. If you have any questions or are interested in more information, reach out to Stephanie Sklar, Math Specialist ([email protected]). The Algebra Project was founded in Cambridge in 1982 by Bob Moses, a Civil Rights Movement veteran, as a math literacy program; YPP uses Math Literacy Work to develop the abilities of elementary through high school students to succeed in school and in life, and in doing so involves them in efforts to eliminate institutional obstacles to their success.

MCAS Scores to be Mailed Home Soon

MCAS score reports from the 2018 - 2019 school year will be mailed to families soon. While MCAS is only one data point in a much more complicated array of assessments, we take the information from this standardized exam seriously. The materials you receive in the mailing will explain your student’s data but we wanted to share with you some key information related to the scores.
