Kindergarteners Go Apple Picking!
On Tuesday, October 8th, our four JK/K classrooms went on their first field trip to Smolak Farms! Two big yellow buses carried them to North Andover to explore the apple orchards, each collecting a bag of apples to bring home. They also had a tractor ride through the orchards and ate cider donuts! This trip serves as an interactive beginning to their study of the seasons.
It had rained that morning, but held off during their time in the orchards. Thanks to the many parent/caregivers who were able to come along as chaperones! Thanks also to our Friends of Haggerty for making this, and all our field trips, possible!

Friends of Haggerty
Friends of Haggerty (FOH) is a parent-run non-profit that raises funds to support enrichment, field trips, and special events that our school has identified as valuable for students. This makes it possible for ALL Haggerty students to participate in field trips, author and musician visits, and more.
Follow our Facebook page to see photos of these events, stay informed about what’s coming up, and get involved!
Thanks to FOH funds, in October kindergarteners visited Smolak Farms to learn about farming and pick apples, and second graders visited a local restaurant so they could learn how to write reviews.

CitySprouts News
Our weekly classes in the garden are always exciting, but now is officially time to enter the bright CIDER life! Cider Pressing with CitySprouts is just around the corner at Haggerty!
If you don't already know, CitySprouts hosts cider pressing every year at each of our partner schools. There will be three days when classes can come outside to observe/compare, wash, cut, grind, and press apples into exSEEDingly delicious cider! The process will be very hands-on for students and will help them to understand the process of how raw fruits are used in making juice.
Cider Pressing will be hosted at Haggerty on the following days:
Friday, October 25th (morning)
Monday, October 28th (afternoon)
Wednesday, October 30th (all day)
Interested in volunteering to help with Cider Pressing at Haggerty? Email CitySprouts Communications Manager, Alex or call 617.876.2436.

Library Corner
By Sarah Novogrodsky
Author Erin Entrada Kelly visited with our 4th and 5th graders. Here is a write up from one of our students.
Erin Entrada Kelly - Author visit
By: Neva
On September 10th, Erin Entrada Kelly came to the Haggerty School for an author visit. We had lots of fun learning about her latest book and first fantasy novel, Lalani of the Distant Sea! She explained the ideas behind her books, Blackbird Fly, You Go First, Hello Universe, The Land of Forgotten Girls and of course, Lalani of the Distant Sea. Growing up in Louisiana, Erin was bullied a lot because she came from the Philippines. She looked different and liked different things than other kids, but nothing stopped her from her dream of becoming a writer. That is what inspired Blackbird Fly. In Lalani of the Distant Sea, the main character, Lalani, lives on an island, kind of like the Philippines called Sanlagita. When Lalani’s mother gets sick she sends Lalani to leave the island and find Mount Isa, a mountain on an island to the north. With lots of obstacles how will Lalani find the secrets of the mountain? Overall, we had a very successful visit with Erin.
Kindergarten students recently read The Big Umbrella (Amy June Bates) and talked about who we love. We also talked about kindness and inclusion at the Haggerty School.
First grade - We begin first grade library classes reading about how children get library books around the world. Here are examples of first grade responses to Waiting for the Biblioburro (Monica Brown).

Math Fun is Here
Two opportunities run by Nataliya Yufa, founder of the Cambridge Math Circle
Every Wednesday, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are invited to a morning Game and Puzzle Club. This club meets from 7:15-7:55AM in the Multi-Purpose Room. Each session starts with a written puzzle or series of problems for students to figure out. Then students play math related board and card games.
On Mondays, 4th and 5th graders are also invited to a Math Lunch Club (12:25-1:05PM), where students will eat, laugh, and solve interesting math problems together.
To help these work, we can use help with two things.
- Can you volunteer at either of the times? We especially need volunteers on Wednesday mornings.
- We are looking for used games in good condition that families no longer need. Some of the specific games we are hoping for include: chess, checkers, othello, mancala, sleeping queens, rat-a-tat-cat, uno/dos, exploding kittens, connect 4, mastermind, blockus, prime climb, sushi-go, and solitaire puzzles like traffic jam or tangrams.
If you can help either with volunteering or with donating games - or if you have questions - please contact Nili Pearlmutter, Haggerty Math Coach.
Happy Mathing!

Race Matters: Courageous Conversations
Wee the People - Thursday, November 7th - 6 - 7:30 PM
What is Racism?
Kids notice a LOT -- including skin color. They sense that it matters, and they have questions about how and why. Together we will explore how racism isn’t just one thing, but a system with many parts working together. Through activities, kids will learn how they can help disrupt and topple these systems. More info. This workshop is geared toward parents/caregivers and students together.
New this year Race matters will be sending out a monthly newsletter with anti-racist articles, books, and actions steps. e-mail [email protected] if you want to be added to our listserv.

Review of Full Moon by Our 2nd Graders!
If you want to relax and eat while your children play, then Full Moon is the place for you! Full Moon is one of the BEST restaurants in the world.
One reason is that the food is marvelous. For example the chicken fingers are juicy and delicious. The french fries are crunchy, salty and really taste like potatoes. Also the macaroni and cheese is really cheesy and the sauce is yummy, but can sometimes be a little bit liquidy. Another reason is that the service is very good. Everyone who works there is polite and will explain anything that you have a question about.
