International Potluck
On Thursday, October 24th, we hosted our annual International Potluck! We had families, and students, create tables for 12 countries - including Israel, Somalia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Italy, Japan, Uruguay, England, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India, Iran and The Gambia! Thanks so much to everyone who put so much effort into these tables. The students used their passports to travel across the world. We were also treated to African drumming and dance by Jafar Manselle and the group, Bamidele Drummers and Dancers. Jafar has taught African drumming at the Haggerty after school for the past four years, so many students already knew him! Thanks to all the families who were able to attend and share food! As always, it was delicious! It was wonderful to share the night with families and staff. Thanks so all those who also helped set-up and clean-up - with special thanks to Carroll Magill for helping with all of it!

Beauty and the Beak
We recently hosted our first STEAM author, Deborah Lee Rose. Her work supports our Technology curriculum as classes grades 3-5 have been learning about 3D design and printing and about the subject matter of her book, the 3D design and creation of a prosthetic beak for an injured eagle. We at the Haggerty are excited to have access to our 3D printer (thanks, Friends of Haggerty!) and the wonderful 3D design site “Tinkercad,” where our students are able to become designers and inventors as they visualize and create their own 3D objects.
In the library the students read the books Beauty and the Beak: How Science, Technology, and A 3D-Printed Beak Rescued a Bald Eagle. The students had wonderful questions for the author. The most exciting part was getting to hold the 3D printed beak that was used with Beauty. Ask your student about the visit!
Thanks to FOH for supporting the Haggerty Library and Technology programming.

First Grade Math Morning
On a recent morning both of our first grade classrooms hosted a math morning for parents/caregivers. The first grade students all sat at tables and taught the grown-ups a variety of math games using either cards, dice or a picture of a ten frame. What is a Ten Frame? Definition: A array of squares used to teach counting, number relationships and computation. (Mathatube.com, Math Glossary)
Here is an example of a ten frame. This is an array of equal spaces aligned in two rows of five. The ten frame supports the concrete and visual understanding of a base-ten number system. It is used in the primary grades to develop a thorough understanding of ten.
The games they played were:
- Get to Ten (using a ten frame)
- 1 or 2 less (dice)
- Roll and Record (dice)
- 5 in a row (dice)
- Double Compare (cards)
- Math Trouble (board game)
Ask your children to teach you one of these games! Thanks for our first grade staff (Ms. Favreau, Ms. Yeh, Ms. D., Ms. Ummill, Ms. Powers, and Ms. M.) for a wonderful math morning!

Race Matters: Courageous Conversations
Wee the People - Thursday, November 7th - 6 - 7:30 PM
What is Racism?
Kids notice a LOT -- including skin color. They sense that it matters, and they have questions about how and why. Together we will explore how racism isn’t just one thing, but a system with many parts working together. Through activities, kids will learn how they can help disrupt and topple these systems. More info. This workshop is geared toward parents/caregivers and students together.
New this year Race matters will be sending out a monthly newsletter with anti-racist articles, books, and actions steps. e-mail [email protected] if you want to be added to our listserv.
Race Matters: Book Recommendation
Looking for some new fiction books for older students? Check out Marti Dumas’s best-selling Jaden Toussaint, the Greatest series. It combines literacy with STEM skills humor, and adds much-needed diversity to the children’s chapter book landscape. Her latest books, Jupiter Storm and The Little Human are middle-grade fantasies being heralded for their skillful combination of science, family, and magic.

Coach's Corner
Math is now taught very differently from the way many of us learned it! Instead of just learning HOW numbers work, children need to understand WHY things work the way they do. These videos, by Graham Fletcher, show the progression that children go through as they learn different math concepts.
Hope you enjoy them!
