Hacking Awesome
HSEP Lead Teacher, Annjilla Rogers-Jensen and Angie UyHam from Design Lab are co-teaching a class “Hacking Awesome”. The course is a year long experience rooted in the Design Process where students design and create future content for HSEP. By working through the process and with facilitators, students will attempt to ignite self-direction and inquiry, with the goal of feeling confident and empowered. Students will also undertake the documentation and presentation of their work, culminating in a public community showcase through which they will gain confidence and experience in a range of media and techniques. Hacking Awesome was visited by Superintendent Salim, Mayor McGovern, and the Mayor’s Office Educational Liaison, Elizabeth Liss!
HSEP Designs
Students in Ms. Robb’s Cohort “H” have been studying how to answer the question, "Where should I live?" To answer this, they researched the difference between renting and owning and found homes in different areas that fit within their budget. They studied interior design by meeting with designers at the local furniture and design store, BoConcept. After that, they used architectural and spatial reasoning skills to create floor plans from home listings and build three dimensional models of their home. Throughout the next weeks students will be using a budget to decorate their homes based on interior design principles learned at BoConcept.
HSEP at University of Massachusetts Boston
Ms. Ferraro and Mr. Gibson of the HSEP College and Career Center brought students to the University of Massachusetts Boston for a tour. Students attended an information session about the school's history, the programs offered, admissions requirements, financial aid, and activities available to students both on and off campus including intercollegiate sports. After the information session, students toured the campus including a visit to their newly built dormitory.
Trip to Boston Public Library
Mr. Goldman’s Cohort “S” visited the Boston Public Library and the Leventhal Map Research Center. The BPL, students were very impressed with the architecture and the quality of the library, especially the main courtyard and the WGBH News Studio and Cafe. Students met with librarians, Lynne and Michelle, who showed students several historical maps and map software to explore how Cambridge has developed and changed over the decades. Students also saw the impact on Cambridge from the Home Owners Loan Corporation maps of the 1930's which designated certain neighborhoods as "high quality" or "hazardous," a process called "Redlining." Residents in Redlined districts were often denied loans for home ownership, severely impacting the social mobility of those areas even today. At the BPL students discussed these issues with experts and learned new tools to help with their current project, creating a map of Cambridge that represents the community and what keeps Cambridge being Cambridge.
