Wee the People!

wee the peopleLast Thursday, Haggerty was lucky to have Tanya and Francie from Wee the People present a workshop on racism for parents and kids. While the workshop was presented to the children, parents were watching to see the children’s powerful insights into the origins of slavery, racism, and its persistent effects on our society.

CitySprouts
cider pressingBy Stephanie Budd

Cider Season at Haggerty was received with great enthusiasm and success!!

We pressed 3 boxes of various apples into 10 pitchers of cider for 10 different classes! The students were engaged in apple trivia, including the fact that there are over 2,500 types of apples that are grown in the US, yet only about 15-20 types that we remember seeing regularly in our grocery stores. The students used professional “pinch and claw” method of holding a (butter) knife to chop the apples into bits small enough for grinding. Using a simple grinding machine, students then wheeled the apple bits into mash! The final step was cranking the press lower and lower to squeeze the apples into cider!

The first drops of juice were always met with squeals of excitement as was the first taste of the juice. Students often noticed differences between the taste of cider and juice - which is simply that apple cider is unfiltered juice that has no additional sugars or additives. Cider Pressing was a fantastic way to close out the growing season at Haggerty, but CitySprouts will continue to be around throughout the school year! Keep an eye out for more news as we move the food system learning indoors!

Coach's Corner
From the Literacy Coach, Suzanne Russell

Greetings Families, It’s that time of year again. No, not the Holiday time of year. Personal Narratives time of year. Yes, in grades 1-4 your children are writing Personal Narrative Stories. These stories highlight a special true moment from a child’s life.

Personal Narrative writing includes:
–A true small moment story
–Sensory details and descriptions
–Dialogue
–Action
–Inner Thinking: our inner thoughts that we don’t always share with others

Grades 1 and 3 are hosting Author Shares on December 17th. Please ask your child’s teacher for times. We hope that you can visit the classrooms to meet the authors and hear these wonderful stories.

book coverIf you are looking for a great story that shows how a small moment can change a life forever, please check out Mo’s Williams newest book, Because. It’s sure to make children and adults of every age smile wide.

Friends of Haggerty

Watch for our letter!

Many classrooms have been participating in wonderful field trips this fall, paid for by Friends of Haggerty. Your donations to FOH make it possible for ALL kids to attend these field trips without being asked to pay a fee, and to participate in enrichment programs, like visits with artists. On Giving Tuesday, December 3rd, we’ll be sending letters home via backpack express encouraging you to donate to our Winter Appeal. Any amount, no matter how big or small, is greatly appreciated.

Another way to help:
On Saturday December 14th, we will be participating in the Community Wraps program at Henry Bear’s Park toy store. We’ll be offering to gift-wrap customers’ purchases for a suggested donation. All funds raised go to support Haggerty enrichment, including the fifth grade trip to Farm School. We need volunteers to wrap! 1-2 hour shifts are available all day - sign up with a friend, or meet a new Haggerty community friend! Email Nadia Khatchadourian.

REMINDERS

Please remember to enter out building using the front door on Cushing Street. Please do not knock on the Lawn Street door to be let in. It puts students in an awkward situation, as they are not supposed to let anyone in that door.
