November/December 2019

Greetings from the Family Liaison

turkey artworkNovember is a time to reflect on what we are all thankful for. I am quite thankful for all of our awesome teachers that go above and beyond for our students every day. I’m also thankful that I get to hangout with your amazing kids! Additionally, I am thankful for all the family and community members that volunteer and help us with our projects such as the K-Lo Market and the Weekend Backpack program. As the weather turns colder, please remember to send your children into school with weather appropriate outdoor clothing. Unless it is actively raining or snowing we take the kids outside for recess. They should have boots, hats, mittens and a warm winter coat. If you are in need of any of these items please let me know and we will see that we can do!!

Placemats

placematsEach year right before Thanksgiving, our kids from the Kennedy-Longfellow school make placemats to go into Food For Free home delivery boxes. These boxes go people that are unable to leave the house to visit food pantries. We love this project! Food For Free does so much for our school...it’s great to give back to them and to members of the community.

A special thanks goes out to Ellen Pierce, our Art Teacher, that pulled this all together yet again!

5th Grade Keypal Site Visit

On November 7, 2019, the KeyPal program kicked off its 26th year with a site visit to IBM, MIT and Draper Laboratory. The KeyPal program is a partnership between fifth-grade students and adult volunteers from three local businesses; Draper Laboratory, IBM, and M.I.T. This year-long program exposes students to a vast majority of occupations through positive interactions in person and email exchange.

Coat Drive

It’s a great time of year for giving and it’s getting cold! We are collecting gently used coats for both children and adults. The CPSD Title 1/Homeless Outreach team are partnering with Riverside Community Health to do a coat drive for families in need. If you have coats you would like to donate please bring them into school….we will have a box in the K-Lo front office. We would also appreciate the donation of hats and gloves for our students!

Cambridge Police

kidsTo show our appreciation for the police officers of Cambridge, our kids wrote thank you cards and made banners expressing our gratitude! Several classrooms also visited the police station and officers came in to talk to students. The Cambridge officers work hard to create trust and build bridges in the community. We wanted to give back to them!

2nd & 3rd Grade Update

artworkSecond and third grade buddy pairs from Room 204 and 201 have been meeting biweekly to build relationships and work collaboratively! Most recently, they finished a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) project where they worked together to create their own imaginary creatures! Pairs were given a limited set of materials and had to use only the power of imagination, teamwork, and creativity to come up with a model as well as information to teach the rest of the group about their unique creation.

Putnam Avenue Upper School is inviting you to their Story of Self Day! Story of Self is a framework of public narrative developed by Harvard Professor and activist, Dr. Marshall Ganz. Individuals consider their values and frame a story from their experience that highlights a choice, a challenge, and an outcone. Turkey Trot

turkey trotWe love starting off the holiday season with our Turkey Trot! This year the weather held out and we were able to have our annual run outside. The run ranges from under a quarter of a mile for our JK/K and 1st grade and up to a mile for our 4th and 5th graders. We had lots of families and friends here to cheer on the kids.

Note from the School Nurse

glass of waterOne of my most common questions to the students who visit me in the health room is “How much water did you drink today?” The answers, of course, vary. I see students every day who have chapped lips, headaches, and stomach aches- and some of this is caused by dehydration. Dehydration means a person is not getting enough water in their body for it to do all the amazing things our bodies need to do to learn and grow. So remember: Water is an essential nutrient for life—we can’t live without it! It represents about two-thirds of our body weight and is part of every living cell. It is a medium for all metabolic changes (digestion, absorption and excretion) in our body, as it helps transport nutrients. As a rule of thumb, to get enough water, your child should drink at least six to eight cups of water a day and eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. So remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
