Galette des Rois
Amelie Nicod, Lily's mom, came to room 211 to teach students about Galette des Rois – a traditional French cake/pastry that is served on the holiday of Epiphany. The youngest child in the family goes under the table and decides who gets what piece of cake. Whoever finds the king (fève) that's hidden in the cake gets to be the king and wear the crown. Amelie helped room 211 students make their own crowns!
Mock Caldecott
CH & LE students are learning about the Caldecott Award, which will be awarded to the most distinguished picture book of the year on Jan. 27th.
LE students hold a Mock Caldecott selection using the same practices as the real committee.
Change
Room 206 is using the theme of "Change" to connects this year's curriculum. How do people's needs change as they move (Studying the movement of people to North America over time), How does weather change? How do animals' and plants' needs change based on where they live and grow? (Our science studies). These are some of the questions we are asking this year. To start off the year and this theme, students visited Fresh Pond in September. Each student chose a tree and sketched it. We returned to sketch that same tree last week. We wonder what it will long like in June!
Learning About Our Planet Earth
Young scientists in Room 283 have been learning about our planet Earth and its inner structure. Do you know what four layers Earth is composed of? Room 283 Kindergarten students know the answer! They created models of four distinct layers of Earth, the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. The models were made of modeling clay and are proudly displayed in the classroom.
Skype Visit with Saadia Faruqi
LE students visited with author Saadia Faruqi, via Skype last Mon. She is the author of the many Yasmin books, one of which we used last summer for our summer reading program. Students developed questions for her before the visit and took turns asking them during the 20 minute call. Everyone learned a lot about what it is like to be a published author. Learn more about this author and her books >>
Skating Fun!
Room 279 could be found this week at the Simeoni rink on Thursday taking part in the DHSP Fun Skate Program. By the end of the session, every student was skating on their own...falling down and getting up...and best of all laughing!
