RAUC CommUNITY Dance:
THIS Friday, January 24 from 6-8PM

–Theme: “Winter Wonderland”
–Tickets are $5, going on sale during lunch the week of the dance or at the door.
–Refreshments (pizza, snacks, water) will also be sold at the dance.
There will also be a polaroid “photo booth”, with images printed on the spot, for $1
–While this dance is sponsored by 6th grade families, it is open to all students.
–As a RAUC community event, only RAUC students may attend; no outside guests please.

RAUC dances are a lot of fun. They also are an important fundraiser that helps Families of RAUC support grade level field trips for all students. You can support the school by signing up to donate time, money, or items to sell at the dance. You can help that evening, or beforehand! View the sign up sheet here: http://bit.ly/2N2Lozg. Please sign up as soon as possible, before Wednesday Jan 22. Every bit helps! Parents do not chaperone the actual dance in the cafeteria, we have staff for that. But you can get a fun view from the edges if you volunteer your time that night!

Feel free to email us (Tracy Walton: [email protected] and Chris Lim: [email protected], 6th grade parent representatives) with questions.

Parent Speaker Series:
Friday, January 24 from 6-8PM

Our topic for the evening is: What Middle Schoolers are saying about vaping and other substances. Learn tips on how to talk with your middle schooler about substances like alcohol, marijuana and vaping. This information can also be used to start a conversation about mental health, sex, and other topics that young people deal with at this stage of like. Both speakers, Tracy Rose-Tynes and Mary Kowalczuk, are from the Cambridge Public Health Department.

Please view the flyer for more information!

RAUC's Unity Concert:
January 30 from 5-7PM

Make sure you have saved the date for January 30th when you can join RAUC at its most popular community event for the year: community dinner and concert.

–With this year’s theme of “Unity Through Diversity,” we invite all our families to join us as we gather to experience diversity of food and music.
–We will provide pasta, salad and bread for our community dinner.
We are also asking our families to enrich our community gathering by bringing a dish to share from your culture. It can be anything that you think represents your family, your culture and your food.
–Our music teachers, and the students, are working very hard to prepare for the concert and we would love to see all our families show support. The event is open to children and adults and we hope you will leave with your heart singing a little tune as well!

Social-Emotional Tip of the Week

Try to make goal-setting a regular activity with your student. It can strengthen intrapersonal skills and helps them to gain ownership of their own learning. It can be helpful for them to revisit and adjust their goals to monitor progress. Help them ask themselves: Am I meeting my goals? What do I need to work on next? How do I want to grow?

If you have any stories of how you have used one of our SEL tips with your own child, please share them with Maggie MacLennan, Ms. Boadu’s intern, at [email protected]!

6th Grade Social Studies Update:
A UN Ambassador Coming Friday!

In the fall, 6th graders studied border conflicts as part of their Geography Unit. Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins and Lauren Buitta heard about the excellent work and important issues our students were grappling with such as, Why does where matter? How should I live? What are borders? Why do they exist?

On Thursday, Lauren Buitta, Founder and CEO of Girl Security, will join Ms. Saillant’s classes and ask students to consider “how does what we do in the name of US national security impact other nations? On Friday, Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins will speak with 6th graders and to students in RAUC’s Model United Nations. Ambassador Jenkins will have an open dialogue with students about their understandings and questions.

We are honored and excited for our students to have these opportunities that will deepen their understandings about important global issues.

Additionally, we want to thank Laura Greggo, a 6th grade parent, for connecting us with these opportunities.

RAUC Volleyball Gave Their All

Last Wednesday the boys and girls volleyball teams traveled to CRLS to participate in the city-wide volleyball tournament. They worked really hard over the season to prepare. Although the teams did not make it to the finals, they tried their best. The competition this year was tough and both teams put forth a hard fight. We're so proud of them and look forward to next year! Shout out to Ms. Thomas and Mr. Moore for their coaching of our RAUC stars.
