Library News
During the last week of December, Ms. Jen and the Kindergarteners visited the new Valente branch of the Cambridge Public Library. They experienced an important rite of passage: getting their first library cards! We had storytime with librarians Maggie and Jennifer. Senior K’s received their cards, but visit with your JK - all 5-year-olds are eligible for a card. There’s something for everyone: books, DVDs, audiobooks, and computers to use! See you at the public library!

Kindergarten and Fifth Grade Book Buddies
Fifth grade students from Shana’s class have been pairing up with Ms. Kristin’s kindergarten students to engage in reading activities. Students enjoyed a read aloud from the Thank You, Omu! before vacation, and decorated cookies together to celebrate the end of 2019. Fifth grade scholars helped their kindergarten buddies decorate cookies and enjoyed their treats together!

Art Update
PreK-5 students learned about a piece of public art designed especially for the King Open School. This sculpture by Nova Jiang called “Same Boat Now” is hanging in our cafeteria. Please ask your children what they learned about it!

Technology Update
Computer Science Education Week was fun for all. Students in PreK-2 learned about coding by using hands-on “toy” robots called Bee-Bots. Together we programmed the Bee-Bots to travel paths. “Bugs" or “oops” in our programs were important parts of learning. Problem solving and perseverance skills were in full action!
Students in grades 3-5 participated in the ¾ Hour of Code. They enjoyed working on their choice of coding activities like Dance Party, Minecraft, Star Wars, and Flappy Birds.
Fourth and fifth graders also worked on a Feast Project. They worked collaboratively to plan a feast. Students used print flyers to “shop” for their items. With a $100 budget student pairs created a shopping list while learning about units, unit price, and total price. Using a spreadsheet and the sum function, they calculated a total cost and created graphs of their feast budget.
Be sure to ask your children about their exciting work with technology!
