house of blues
Fifth Graders Rock the House of Blues!

The 5th grade had an excellent field trip to House of Blues on Wednesday, December 18th. The Blues Schoolhouse puts on a lively show that “traces the history, evolution and impact of blues music, highlighting the role music plays in reflecting the human condition and driving social change”. This year we had front row seats and enjoyed some dancing and singing along with songs we recognized. More information can be found here.

Thank you to Ms. Irvin-Kent for setting us up with this trip again this year and for getting us some transportation money from the Big Yellow Schoolbus Grant! Another big thanks to Friends of Haggerty for paying for the rest of the cost of the bus to get us all there!

Library Corner

library photosK Cambridge Public Library Cards: Librarian Margaret Macri, from the Collins Branch on Aberdeen Ave., distributed library cards and goodie bags to kindergarteners in December. If your child turned five since the beginning of the school year, you can take them to any public library branch and get a ?shiny, new library card.

First graders read books about children around the world and focus on common themes such as games, food, clothing, family celebrations. We are looking for “mirrors and windows” where students can make personal connections or learn something new. Here are a few student work examples related to Pancakes to Parathas - Breakfast Around the World by Alice McGinty.

Still time for your fourth/fifth grader to read/listen to at least five of the Massachusetts Children's Book Award titles. MCBA is a nice way to explore books that a student might not pick up while browsing the library shelves. A number of students have already read at least five or more of the books and are eager to cast their vote.

Room 103 Displays Their Animal Habitats!

As part of their Discovering Nature unit, students studied living things that have body parts and behaviors that help them survive, and their behavior and body parts depend on where and how they live. They researched an animal and built a diorama based on their research. The students reflected on how the animals' habitats were structured to meet their needs.

Race Matters
We hope you can join us on Thursday, February 6th, 6-7:30PM for a follow up conversation to the Wee the People “What Is Racism” Workshop. In this conversation for all parents, teachers, and other adult community members, we will recap key points from the workshop including approaches to talking with children about race, White privilege, stereotypes, and racial representation. This will launch us into our own discussions of how we can help children to understand systemic racism. Childcare will be provided by Friends of Haggerty. Pizza will be available for a $1/slice suggested donation.

Please RSVP to Meredith Moore ([email protected] or 718.753.4979) or here so that we can plan for childcare and food.

CitySprouts
citysprouts projectBy Stephanie Budd

2019 was my first year as a Garden Educator with CitySprouts and my first year in the Boston area. It was such a pleasure getting to finish the calendar year and start the school year working getting to know the students of Haggerty and learn more about nature with them! I enjoyed exploring landforms and engineering solutions to problems with the second grade classes, designing thoughtful structures that will help extend the growing season with the fifth grade, and have loved taking a close look at seeds with some of the kindergarten classes!

As we move forward into the rest of the school year, CitySprouts will continue to be involved at Haggerty, bringing the outdoor learning indoors for the coldest months of the year! I am looking forward to lots of exciting lessons and learning with the students - which are sure to be absolutely amazing!

The money earned goes directly back to the classrooms for student enrichment, and supports things like field trips, library books, and artist and author visits (and much much more!!).

REMINDERS

Please remember to enter our building using the front door on Cushing Street. Please do not knock on the Lawn Street door to be let in. It puts students in an awkward situation, as they are not supposed to let anyone in that door.
