Winter Concert 2020

Baldwin ConcertOur JK - 2 music teacher Ms. Isun Malekghassemi presented a beautiful winter concert to our school community on January 16th, warming the hearts of everyone. What an amazing site to see close to 100 kindergarten students sing and perform in unison, wowing their families performing traditional Hungarian, English, Cameroonian and Irish songs along with the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Plate Dance (pictured right). A highlight of the concert was watching students in first grade perform a Russian folk-dance. They performed a whimsical song tale, The Tailor and the Mouse. Second graders impressed all with their partner song, where they sing in harmony two songs at the same time. Thank you to Ms. Isun for a glorious start to the day.

Principal's Corner

In grade levels 1-5, we utilize report cards as one means of providing information about student performance. We hope you’ll find the report card to be a useful and meaningful guide for how your child is progressing in relationship to the expectations for the grade level, which are based on the Massachusetts state learning standards. You should expect report cards in the mail (grades 3-5) or in backpacks (grades 1-2) at the end of January.? Read on >>

Emily shows off the bag she designed and sewed. Quinn and Mihret are creating imaginative stuffed animals. Jane is working on the machine, showing she has the skills to use it properly. Some of their designs will be on display at the spring art show.

Popsicle Stick Bridge Challenge in STEM Club

PopsiclesIn STEM Club, parent Josh led a lesson about how bridges are engineered to withstand weight. They learned about truss bridges which are made connected triangles. They are designed for load and for stress. The kids put their engineering prowess to the test by putting weight on their bridge.

RecommendedRecommended

Imagine a hallway with pictures and student work that is so enticing you stop and read every one of them. Second grade created book reviews, writing compelling stories about why they recommend their book. Their display worked! It is amazing watching students and families walk through the hall and stop to read each and every one on display. I bet Megan McDonald would be happy to see that her book is on the recommended list!

News from the Food and Nutrition Department

Food is an integral piece of culture and cultural identity, and school lunch is no exception in a diverse community like Cambridge! Help the CPS Food & Nutrition Department update its menu by sharing your favorite cultural/family meals! Do you make a dish that's been passed down in your family? Have you been writing down the steps and ingredients so as not to lose traditional meals? We are interested in dishes from all cultures and parts of the globe!
International Flavors is a collaboration between the Cambridge Public Health Department and CPS Food & Nutrition Services. This program encourages children to taste and learn about healthy new dishes from around the world, before they are added to the regular lunch menu. Our goal is to make meals that better reflect our student body, and promote the idea that school lunch is delicious, nutritious and culturally diverse!

Please contact Rachael Cross, Public Health Nutritionist, with recipes or questions at 617.665.3759.

MIT Shine
We are MIT SHINE, a team of women MIT students looking to help young girls discover their passion for math. Our program is a once-weekly, 2.5 hour session on MIT's campus, during which the girls will dance, play games, and do math one-on-one with a mentor. The SHINE curriculum is flexible and designed to allow girls to work at a level that is appropriate and interesting for them. We have had extremely positive reviews from girls and parents alike, and we hope to grow SHINE even more in the coming semester.
