Fifth Graders Host Spaghetti Dinner!
The 5th graders held their annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser to help them on their two night, overnight field trip, to The Farm School on Thursday, January 30th. It was a great turnout! 5th grade families cooked meatballs, made sauce, baked brownies, and made a lovely salad. (The spaghetti was made at school!) Everything was delicious! Thanks to the local business who donated supplies to make the dinner - Shaw's on Mt. Auburn, Iggy's, and Russo's! They also garnered a lot of wonderful raffle prizes, to help the cause as well! Thanks to all the local businesses who donated to our raffle, including King Pine Mountain, Pammy's Restaurant, 1369 Coffee House, Nirvana, The Melting Pot (now called Base Crave), Apple Cinema, Barre-3 Somerville, Pyara Day Spa, Crate Escape, Henry Bear's Park, Healthworks, Trader Joe's, and Pemberton. Thanks also to the many families who got all these terrific prizes and helped support their 5th graders in so many ways!

Library Corner: Student Writers
Our 5th graders are busy writing, they’re working on book reviews, movie reviews, and this week we have 2019 reflections.
A Year in Review, by Jackie and Sloane.
What are some BIG things that happened in 2019
In 2019 a lot of BIG things happened, but here's a run down of some good things and some BAD things too. Let's start on the good side of things!
- The US women's soccer team won the world cup in France!
- The school strikes and mounting awareness of the climate emergency, which is when youth (Kids) protested for climate change. Their goal was to get $1,500,000 they’re almost there!
- Tayler Swift won artist of the year!
- The fact that more people voted in elections than ever before!
NASA shared the first ever real picture of a black hole ever taken
This is the first EVER picture of a blackhole!
What are some BAD things that happen in 2019
- In November, bush fires started spreading around Australia setting fire to everything. In a few months, this devastating fire has killed more than a billion animals. Sadly, these fires are still raging and show no signs of stopping.
- The sad Australia fires were not the only fires that started in 2019. The iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris caught fire in April. Its been more than 9 months since this fire. Construction and repair is still being worked on.

First graders are learning how to locate books in the library by the author’s last name. These two first graders used “theme rings” to guide them.
We are all enjoying this year’s batch of Caldecott and Seuss Geisel Award books. Nothing like holding a book with a shiny new medal on its cover!
First ever graphic novel to win the Newbery Award, New Kid by Jerry Craft. Many students have already read it, as it is a choice book for the Massachusetts Childrens’ Book Award.
Our library tree is growing “Books We Love to Read” hearts.

Race Matters: Courageous Conversations
On Thursday, February 6th a diverse group of Haggerty parents gathered in the library to discuss how we can help our children understand race and racism. We talked about topics including naming race with kids, white privilege, stereotypes, and representation of racial groups in the media. Participants shared their varying personal experiences and beliefs, which made for an interesting conversation. Keep your eyes out for our next event, which will take place in the spring.
In the meantime, here are a few resources to explore:
If you would like to learn about additional resources and related events, email us to be added to the Race Matters listserv.
