Mathematical Morning with Ms. Moylan's Class
The students in room 214 presented the math learning to their families. Parents were engaged as they learned the different ways students learn math in first grade by going to their math stations including choral counting, "how many am I hiding", domino math fact families, renaming numbers and Symphony math.

Fourth Grade Showcase of Learning
4th grade students have been very busy. They showcased their work in math, science and social students by hosting a parent breakfast. The atmosphere was amazing with so many parents admiring the work of the students. In math, students learn to multiply up to 4 digits by 1 digit and 2 digits by 2 digits using the partial product area model method which is based on place value. Students were able to show the procedure to families. Their Road to Division in math shows their understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division. Some students presented their river reports, reporting on the longest rivers in the United States. They are working on basic research techniques. Students also presented their research projects on animals.

Principal's Corner
I write today to encourage you with a loving push to please fill out the family survey that the district has recently sent information about. This survey data is incredibly valuable to us at Baldwin and your participation is very important!
When this type of survey data comes out, we go right to it to think about the ways that we can better serve students. I’m also thrilled to read about those things we should be celebrating!
Our Baldwin motto is “Baldwin: One Community, Many Voices.” We need your voice now!
You can fill out the online survey here (it works great on a phone, too!) and please be open, honest and candid. The better your feedback, the more useful the tool! You can also ask Susan for a paper copy if you need it.
Here’s the link if you want to copy and paste!
With gratitude for your valuable time,
Heidi

Rhythmical Morning!
Grade 3 & 4 Winter Concert
Mr. Jamal Fairbanks led the 3rd and 4th grade in a spectacular concert.
Students showed their drumming prowess. They started by showing how they warm up at the beginning of class with a student leader. And then they rocked the gymatorium as they drummed together. The upbeat finale of Best Day of My Life left everyone with a feeling of positivity. The lyrics about never giving up is a continued theme of grit that is emphasized in those grades.

Author Tom O'Donnell Visits Fourth
Tom O'Donnell is the author of the Hamstersaurus Rex series. Our fourth grade students enjoyed an afternoon with him, collaborating to create their own adventurous story of a fierce serpent of despair in a dungeons and dragons format using a 20-sided dice to guide their story.
"Tom O'Donnell is a screenwriter, TV writer and the author of the popular Hamstersaurus Rex series. His new middle-grade fantasy novel, Homerooms & Hall Passes, which received a starred Booklist review and was optioned by New Line Cinema, is a funny adventure story about five fantasy heroes who suddenly find themselves trapped in middle school."
Thank you Ms. Kugel for arranging this incredible opportunity for our students.

Raptors
Our kindergarten classrooms enjoyed a morning with owls! Jim Parks of Wingmasters introduced the students to three types of owls; barred owl, eastern scratch owl, and the great horned owl. Mr. Parks explained how animals use their sight and hearing as well as their special, soft feathers to survive. You may see the great horned owl in the trees of Cambridge. Thank you Friends of Baldwin!

iRobot Visits Girls Who Code
Prajakta, a Product Manager at iRobot and her intern, Nomuka, visited the students of Girls Who Code club to talk about the robotic vacuum cleaner Roomba, a man/woman made creation. Roomba was designed by MIT roboticists. Roomba’s have sensors that help it navigate and are guided by software code.Millions have been sold. As product managers, they come together to design and make successful products but it takes a lot of revising. Their job is to determine what is important to people and make sure the product does what people need.
When Prajakta was in 4th grade, she loved reading mystery books and wanted to be a detective. When she went to Tufts University, she pursued a degree in chemical engineering. Engineers are very curious and continually ask questions and her education helped her think logically and analytically which helps in solving problems.
Nomuka always liked helping people. When she was in 4th grade, she loved math and writing. When she went to college, she studied software engineering and business and loves the idea of creating new products that will help other people achieve their goals.
Thank you to Jonah for arranging for these impressive young professionals to come and talk to our students.

Coming Soon … STEM Fest
For many years, wonderfully invested parents run a weekly STEM Club on Friday mornings. Parents Josh, Beth, Colin, Allen and other volunteers work with students teaching, building and problem solving. STEM Club parents are working with Ms. Heidi planning an annual day of STEM. This year, STEM Fest will be on Friday, March 20. This remarkable day will begin with an all-school meeting. Every grade will have a STEM presentation and then a hands-on STEM activity. Volunteers will be needed for STEM Fest in every classroom. Once the schedule is finalized, there will be a call for volunteers. Please be on the lookout for an email looking for classroom volunteers to support this exciting day. We look forward to having our families join the STEM fun!
