STEAM
On Thursday, February 27th we held our 5th annual STEAM Night! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Thanks to parent Carroll Magill for spear-heading this event yet again! We had 14 hands on activities spread out across the building led by a variety of community organizations or parent volunteers. Activities included a Fog Ring Vortex Cannon (MIT students from dynoMIT), Augmented Reality Sandbox (Andrew & Lisa Harteveldt, Haggerty parents), Arduino Robotics Demonstration (Jose-Luis Martinez, RSTA teacher and CRLS students), Origami and Math Art (Nili Pearlmutter, Haggerty Math Coach, and Margie Singer, Haggerty Math Interventionist), Quiver Masks and new STEAM kits (Emily St. Germain and Margaret Macri, STEAM programming Cambridge Public Library), Makey Makey and BEE Bots in the computer lab (Mr. McGonegal, Haggerty Educational Technology Specialist), Marshmallow Engineering Challenge (Mr. Reynolds, Haggerty Art Teacher), Seed Planting Activities (Haggerty CitySprouts Gardener Stephanie Budd), Green Rooftop & Planting (Mothers Out Front), Natural Science Station (Darrin Johnson and New England Base Camp), One Minute of Wonder (Kahtleen Fitzgerald, Haggerty parents and founder of Cambridge Environmental Literacy Project), Art from Recyclables (Carroll Magill, Haggerty Parent), and Wind Tube (built by Stos Koyanis, Haggerty Parent). MCBA Book Award Voting!
Fourth and fifth graders have begun to cast their vote for their favorite Massachusetts Children’s Book Award title. Not all votes are in yet, but it’s looking like a three way tie: The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, New Kid, and Ban This Book. Over the next week we’ll see how our peers across the district voted and by the end of March we should know the state winner!
March - Reading Celebration Month!
During the month of March, Haggerty is celebrating reading throughout the building. We have a tradition of dressing as a favorite book character, which we will do on Friday, April 3. Stay tuned for more information. You can volunteer to be a guest reader in your student’s classroom by emailing the teacher.
Math Coach Corner
By: Nili Pearlmutter, Haggerty Math Coach
Math is taught very differently now than when most of us were in school. One great resource for asking questions and learning more about how math is taught now is the Facebook group “Adding Parents to the Equation.”
The professors who created this group wanted “to create a place for parents to turn for resources, assistance, and advice.” Enjoy!

Grade 3 Science and Literacy
By: Suzanne Russell and Chi Kuo
This year, we have been planning our (ELA) literacy lessons along with the Grade 3 Science curriculum. Currently, the class is learning about Forces and Motion. Students explore how different forces affect the motion of objects via hands-on investigations. One of our first experiments is to design and build parachutes of different sizes. Students will explore how the forces of air resistance and gravity affect the fall of the parachutes.
Later, students will use what they learn to design and build their own marble runs using the Engineering Design Process. As a culminating assessment, they explain the forces involved in their projects.

Happy National Nutrition Month!
Did you know that students who eat breakfast may see increases in their concentration and test scores? Students who regularly eat breakfast also have fewer behavioral issues in the classroom and fewer tardy days. Cambridge schools offer FREE complete breakfast (i.e., a hot meal, fruit and milk) to all students. Maybe it’s time your family gave it a try? Find school menus here >>
School Breakfast Week & World Food Taste Party
Food & Nutrition Services invites you to join us in celebrating National School Breakfast Week March 2nd - 6th, with an Out of This Country theme. Our theme coincides with World Language Week, in which kitchens will be featuring cultural dishes from around the world at lunch.
