Learning Innovation Showcase
Students, Dania Feraud and Isaac Ferrini, proudly represented HSEP at the Learning Innovation Showcase at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. The showcase was an opportunity for student teams from schools across the Commonwealth to share their projects and practices with fellow students and educators. HSEP student work, which included graphic novels, short stories and merchandise based on the effects that global warming may have on the future of society were presented by Dania and Isaac. Great job!

Career Prep at HSEP
Mr. Gibson, coordinator of our Career Prep Program at HSEP has helped students Daviany Padilla Rodriguez and Dania Feraud with internships this semester at the East End House and Cambridge Police Department. The Career Prep Program helps 12th grade students think about their potential career pathways as well as coordinate with community organizations and businesses to develop internships. Within the program students participate in Career Readiness workshops in Semester 1 and then intern in Semester 2. The internships take place on "Real World Wednesday's" and students intern for 30-45 hours over a span of 10-15 weeks.

FoodLab TLC Valentines Day
The HSEP FoodLab prepared another delicious meal for our community on Valentine’s Day using the concept of TLC, but replaced the“T” for tacos and the “C” for cupcakes. FoodLab prepared a taco station with yummy, fresh ingredients, which included pulled chicken, ground beef, pico de gallo, guacamole, chopped jalapenos and hot sauce. Additionally, there were homemade red velvet cupcakes that were amazing. Thank you, FoodLab!

Black History Month
HSEP celebrated Black History Month with a series of events. We hosted a school-wide screening of the film Harriet at the Public Library. Throughout the week, trivia clues and music were played. Additionally, History teacher, Mr. Minihan and ASL teacher, Mr. Strickler showed a film about Dr. Andrew Foster, a deaf African-American educational leader that started over 30 schools for the deaf in 13 African countries. We ended our week with a Black History photo collage challenge where students named as many of the impactful and influential people as they could. Congrats to winners, Amanuel Gebru and Roodaly Dessalines!

HSEP Votes Super Tuesday
HSEP on Super Tuesday hosted our own mock election primary. It was an opportunity for students to learn about the primary voting process and importance of civic duty. Students and staff were invited to cast votes for the candidate of their choosing. Hopefully, the mock election will inspire students to think about politics both locally and globally, and cast a vote in November!

Sound Panel Collaboration with MakerSpace and PBL
Mr. Strickler’s Makerspace are making sound panels in collaboration with Mr. Goldman and Ms. Robb’s 11th and 12th grade cohorts, who are working on developing and recording their Criminal Investigation podcasts. The students are building six acoustic panels for the studio where the podcasts will be recorded. Students have already cut and assembled the wood frames for the panels, and will install acoustic mineral wool insulation inside of each frame and additionally wrap the panels with fabric. Once the panels are complete, students will mount them on the walls of the studio, and be ready to record their podcasts!

Happy National Nutrition Month!
Did you know that most of the added sugar we consume actually comes from sugary drinks? The sports drinks, energy drinks, sodas, frozen drinks (Coolatas, Slurpees, etc.) and coffee drinks really add up. Focus on milk, fortified milk-alternatives, and tap water for your best health! Small changes can really add up, so start shifting habits today.
For more on how to spot added-sugar, click here. Click here on how to find added-sugars on the food label.
