Dear Families,

This has been quite a week with elections and the ongoing pandemic weighing on all of us. With that in mind, I want to focus this newsletter on some of the exciting, positive work we continue to do and find joy in our school community.

Learning Highlights
Group 1The two fifth grade groups had a special guest this week. "El Catrin" (you may have seen him before if you play Lotería) came to their class to explain the meaning of the Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is a celebration of life and death and while it originated in México it is celebrated in many Latin American countries and often known or recognized by its calacas and calaveras.
Group 2

In third grade, students in Ms. Lewis’s class celebrated their narrative stories using FlipGrid. Students not only wrote narratives in both English and Spanish but presented them in an interactive, fun and engaging way. I absolutely loved being able to see the students and listen to their stories.

From Our Counselors
This week middle school students registered for after school clubs. Students had the option to choose between Debate, Gender and Sexuality Alliance, Amigas in Movement and Amigos Journal (exciting new club). Some students signed up for more than one club! We are currently working on adding one or two more additional clubs, so stay tuned! We’re also starting a grade level Lunch Bunch every Tuesday from 12:30-1pm where students will get the opportunity to get together, play games and have a good time. If you would like for your student to participate in any of these activities please have them email Ms. Santos-Dugan @ [email protected]

Debate: Ms. Litten- Mondays 3-4 & Wednesdays 4-5
GSA: Mr. Civiello- Thursdays 3-4
AIM: Ms. Santos- Fridays 3-4
Journal: Fr. McClelland- Fridays 2:30-3:30

From the Family Liaison
To participate in the Jr.K/ Kindergarten Lottery in January 2021, children must be 4 years old by March 31, 2021. Please send an email to, [email protected] to let her know that you will be registering your child and cc Sheila Colon, [email protected]. We will need to send a list of Amigos School Siblings to the Student Registration Center. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the Amigos Jr.K/Kindergarten Sibling registration will be online not in person. There will be two virtual Jr.K/Kindergarten information sessions: Wednesday, November 18, 6-7pm and Saturday, November 21 from 10am-11am. It will be important to attend one of these sessions for the most current information. To register for one of these sessions please go to the Cambridge Public School Website. In the meantime, we ask that you please locate all of the required documents for registration: a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport and vaccination record, a utility bill (cable, gas or electric) within the past 30 days, a copy of the parent’s valid MA driver’s license / passport / MA identification card. Also please remember to make an appointment for the Spanish test if your child is a native Spanish speaker.

Amigos in the News
Don’t miss the Edutopia article featuring our school and the work we have been doing related to culturally responsive teaching. While this work is never done, we are excited and honored to be celebrating how we work to create an academically challenging and responsive school experience for all our students.

I hope you all have a moment to go out and enjoy the good weather.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Estimadas Familias,

Atentamente,

Sarah Bartels-Marrero
