Dear Families,
We made the switch from in-person to remote fairly smoothly this past Monday. I appreciate your support and understanding during this challenging time. There is a lot to consider as we navigate our desire to be open and the safety - both physical and emotional - of our students and staff. Covid testing results come in all the time. This past weekend I was alerted to the additional case in our building on Sunday and collaborated with district and city health officials to determine our next steps and get information out to families as soon as possible. I know that making these shifts quickly is difficult but for now it is part of our reality. Please know that we work diligently to get clear and accurate information out to you as quickly as possible.
As Superintendent Salim wrote in his community message earlier this week, “We know it can be confusing about what happens when there is a case in a classroom or school, because the specifics of each situation must be taken into consideration to inform a decision”. At present (but subject to change as science and policies evolve), we are using the following protocol:
Positive case in your child’s classroom
-- All families in classroom are notified
-- Current protocol is for a classroom with a positive case (staff or student) to shift to remote learning for 14 days as to the last potential contact with an individual who tested positive
Positive case in school building, not your child’s classroom
-- Families of all students in the school will be notified
-- Cambridge Department of Public Health will conduct contact tracing and determine the need for quarantining
FAMILIES/CAREGIVERS: If your child tests positive: Contact the principal. Do NOT communicate this information to other students or families
STAFF: If a parent/caregiver tells you that a student has tested positive: Contact the principal. Do NOT communicate this information to other staff, students, or families.
Upper School News
This year all upper school students will be taking math and literacy screeners remotely through the Fastbridge site. This platform was used in elementary, so students should be familiar with both the site and the screener. Amigos upper school students will take both screeners next week. Students will join a Google Meet where they will take the assessment independently, but also have a teacher available to review the directions and troubleshoot any tech issues. Please remind your child to use headphones if they have them, sit in a quiet location, be on time to the Meet and ask for help if needed. It is also important that they do not have other tech distractions, such as phones or multiple open tabs, during this time. We appreciate your support with reminding students of the importance of following the expectations for completing online screeners.
From the Guidance Counselor
Teenage years are hard for different reasons. It’s not uncommon for adolescents to experience anxiety and depression due to hormones including changes happening physically and mentally. Unfortunately Covid 19 and school closures have only made things worse, exasperating symptoms of anxiety and depression. Here you’ll find a couple of resources I wanted to share with you hoping you would find it helpful. Mental Health and Teens: Watch for Danger Signs and Parenting Tips for Anxious Kids. If you are concerned about your student’s behavior please speak with them about it and allow them to express their feelings. Adolescents want to be heard, seen and valued by their parents. Asking them direct questions about your concerns will show them that you care and want to help. If you would like to ask any questions or if you would like for me to check in with your student please send me an email.
Amigos Merch is BACK
Our Amigos School store is once again open for business. Please submit your orders by November 30th in order to receive any gifts for the holidays. The orders will be made available for pick up during specific dates/times TBD at either Amigos or at a lunch delivery spot/playground.
From the Family Liaison
To participate in the Jr.K/ Kindergarten Lottery in January 2021, children must be 4 years old by March 31, 2021. Please send an email to Lilian Rater to let her know that you will be registering your child and cc Sheila Colon. We will need to send a list of Amigos School Siblings to the Student Registration Center. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the Amigos Jr.K/Kindergarten Sibling registration will be online, January 4-31, 2021. For the most up to date information please attend the virtual Jr.K/Kindergarten information session on Saturday, November 21 from 10am-11am. To register for the session, please go to the Cambridge Public School Website, Cambridge MA and search for the Student Registration Center web page. The session will also be taped for families that can not attend. In the meantime please locate all of the required documents for registration: your child’s birth certificate or passport, their vaccination record, a utility bill (cable, gas or electric) within the past 30 days, a copy of the parent’s valid MA driver’s license / passport / MA identification card. If your child is a native Spanish speaker, please contact Marlyn Rosa / 617-349-6551 to schedule a Spanish test. There are two reserved test dates for Amigos Siblings: Monday, December 7 and Monday, December 14. If you have any questions, please contact the Student Registration Center, 617-349-6551. Hicimos el cambio de presencial a remoto sin problemas el lunes pasado. Aprecio su apoyo y comprensión durante este tiempo difícil. Hay mucho que considerar mientras navegamos nuestro deseo de ser abiertos y la seguridad - tanto física como emocional - de nuestros estudiantes y personal. Los resultados de los exámenes de Covid llegan todo el tiempo. Este fin de semana pasado me avisaron del caso adicional en nuestro edificio el domingo y colaboré con los funcionarios del distrito y de la ciudad para determinar nuestros próximos pasos y conseguir información para las familias lo antes posible. Sé que hacer estos cambios de manera rápida es difícil, pero por ahora es parte de nuestra realidad. Noticias de la escuela intermedia
Este año todos l@s estudiantes de la escuela intermedia tomarán exámenes de matemáticas y lectura a distancia a través del sitio Fastbridge. Esta plataforma fue usada en la primaria, así que l@s estudiantes deben estar familiarizados tanto con el sitio como con los exámenes. L@s estudiantes de la escuela intermedia tomarán ambos exámenes la próxima semana. La adolescencia es difícil por muchas razones. No es raro que los adolescentes experimenten ansiedad y depresión debido a las hormonas, incluyendo los cambios que ocurren física y mentalmente. Desafortunadamente, el Covid 19 y el cierre de escuelas sólo han empeorado las cosas. Aquí encontrarán un par de recursos que quería compartir contigo con la esperanza de que le resulten útiles. Salud Mental y Adolescentes: Estén atentos a las señales de peligro y La ansiedad en los adolescentes va en aumento: ¿qué está pasando?.Si le preocupa el comportamiento de su estudiante, por favor hable con ellos y permitirles expresar sus sentimientos. Los adolescentes quieren ser escuchados, vistos y valorados por sus padres. Haciéndoles preguntas directas sobre sus preocupaciones les mostrará que se preocupan y quieren ayudar.
