geisel award2021 Youth Media Awards

The American Library Association announced its 2021 Youth Media Awards on Monday, January 25th. Ms. Jessica was selected to be on the Theodor Seuss Geisel award committee to choose the most distinguished early reader book published in 2020. Ms. Jessica and the committee worked hard to look at all the books in that category and make their decisions!

movable alphabetMovable Alphabet

Ms. Sandra, a Room 283 teacher, is preparing the Movable Alphabet for students. Using the Movable Alphabet, a traditional Montessori set of letters, helps young learners build words. Students learn how to read, spell and write with these beautifully designed cards of vowels in blue and consonants in red. We would like to thank Ms. Sandra and Ms. Malika for getting such an exciting language material for our students!

Wednesday Math Circle Update

Wednesday Math Circles will be meeting on January 27th and February 3rd as usual. We have a different calendar than CPS, and partly that's by design, so that when kids would not be seeing their teachers and classmates, they can still see folks in math circles. (We do take school vacations off.)

Upgrade Your Mask! High-Quality Mask Trial Packs for Sale and for Free

You might have seen some chatter about high-quality KF94 masks on the CPS parents listserv or on Facebook. Another Cambridge mom (Amanda Beatty/Amigos) and I are organizing kid and adult-size mask trial packs -- a pack with four different masks each so you can try different styles for fit and comfort. Packs will be at most $10 each (or free to anyone who cannot afford this). There is no obligation to participate. All details are in this document, including: why upgrade to a high-quality mask, instructions for ordering (using this form), exact masks included in each pack, mask-wearing tips, a FAQ, and pickup locations.

Hope you can participate! Please order by January 27!

Reach out to me with questions.

Also – we are looking for volunteers to coordinate distribution at Baldwin, FMA, G&P, Haggerty, and Peabody, during pickup or dropoff. Please reach out to us if you can help at one of these places or have another suggestion for a pickup location.

Thank you!
Jenn (Tobin) & Amanda (Amigos)

White Families Working Toward
Anti-Racism

Please join us for a monthly affinity group for White Caregivers Working Toward Anti-Racism. The affinity group for White Caregivers Working Toward Anti-Racism is reading and learning from Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad. Our next session will take place on Wednesday, February 10th from 6:30-8PM. If you would like to attend, please complete this Google Form.
In preparation for the session all participating caregivers should read the Week 1 (pp. 31-74) in Me and White Supremacy

There will be reading to complete before each session, and we strongly encourage families to make a commitment to attend as many sessions as possible. This group will meet virtually once each month on the following upcoming Wednesdays in 2021 from 6:30-8PM.

• March 3rd
• April 7th
• May 19th

We hope to see you soon!

Please Join! Read Against Racism –
A Book Club for Parents/Guardians

You (and any parents or guardians you know) are invited to join our book club: Read Against Racism. Read Against Racism is intended as a safe space where local parents can embrace difficult conversations and share perspectives on race and equity in Camberville and surrounding areas. Our goal is to build understanding, support a community that values all people, and cultivate shared vision for an equitable future. We know caregivers are busy and many times don't read the entire book. Don't let that hold you back from joining in our discussions-finishing the books isn't required! We meet the first Saturday of every month at 7-9PM.

If you'd like to receive the virtual meeting links each month, please email us or join our Google Group. RAR is also on Facebook.

Cambridge in Motion Updates

Movement/Physical Activity
:
Use Your Stairs to Stay Active! Running or walking up and down the stairs in your house or apartment building can be a great high intensity cardio and leg workout. One option for those starting out is to add walking intervals every few floors. For example, leave the stairwell and walk the length of the hallway and back before resuming your climb. Take the activity level up a notch by climbing two steps at a time, sprinting a few flights or doing jumping jacks between floors to raise the intensity!

Food, Nutrition & Home Gardening
:
Cambridge Food Resources During COVID-19: This updated list includes all the current places where residents can find free food resources. This includes food pantries, community meals, school meals, and meal delivery options! Translations available in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Amharic and Mandarin (on the same Cambridge in Motion website).
• STEAM Cooking Camp (Feb Vacation): Explore your curiosity in our February Vacation Cooking Camp! For students in grades 6-8, running Feb 16-18th, with online classes from 9:30-11:30AM and 3-5PM. FREE (no registration costs or fees & all food will be provided!). Info: 617.864.0960 or email and register HERE.
Seeds We Eat: Most people eat seeds every day, even if they don’t realize it. Edible seeds come in many forms and make up a large part of human diets. In this free at-home lesson from The Edible Schoolyard, you’ll think about seeds you eat, do a coloring activity, and learn about different categories of edible seeds.
Recipe of the week: Enjoy these Cinnamon Apple Chips (bake or air fry) as part of a delicious and healthy snack the whole family will love!

Mental & Emotional Wellness
:
Free Expert Videos on 'Parenting During the Pandemic': Check out the FB Live video archive from Child Mind Institute and you'll find videos on Building Strong Self Esteem, How to Help Kids with Math Anxiety, Toddlers and Sleep, Grief and Grieving, Parenting through Anxiety, and so much more! Learn from the experts in these 15-25 minute videos with options in English and Spanish.

Lasagna Love!
There's a group of awesome people making and delivering home-cooked lasagnas for families who are struggling as a result of the pandemic. Lost income, lost childcare, impacted by COVID in another way? Whatever the situation, we want to help! It’s a meal, neighbors helping neighbors, no strings attached. We have volunteers ready to help as soon as this week!! Request a meal: If you would like a hand with dinner one night in the coming weeks sign up here. Feel free to share the link with others!

Fight the Flu. Get Your Flu Shot!
Now more than ever, it is critically important to get a flu shot (also called seasonal flu vaccine). Flu season begins in the late fall and goes through winter, peaking between the months of December and February, but people can still get the flu as late as May. Preventing the spread of flu will limit the need for flu-related medical appointments and hospitalizations, freeing up resources to help people with COVID-19. You can make an appointment for a flu shot with either your healthcare provider or local pharmacy. Cambridge Health Alliance patients (12 - 22 years old) OR Cambridge Public Schools students (12 - 22 years old) can now receive a flu shot at the Teen Health Center located in Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Call 617.665.1548 to schedule an appointment.
