April is Poetry Month

April is National Poetry month. This year marks the 25th annual celebration of national Poetry month.  You can read more about this national tribute to poetry here.

In observance of national poetry month, the Cambridge Public Library sponsors an annual Poetry Contest for all students in grades K-8. This is the 22nd annual CPL poetry contest.  CPL have historically combined this poetry contest with honoring Arbor Day each year.  Cambridge students have been writing poetry about trees for 21 years.  Due the pandemic, this year, CPL decided to open the contest to any original poetry for all students grades K-8.  Many Haggerty students have been writing poetry this month, some with themes or trees and some with no theme at all.

Students have learned about highly structured poetry and very unstructured poetry, students are writing rhyming and non-rhyming poems.  Poetry offers creativity and personal expression for all students!  First graders wrote poems inspired by the school garden, while many other students wrote about the power and strength of trees and nature. Here are few of our amazing Haggerty student poems. Enjoy.  - Suzanne Russell - ELA Coach

Trees by William T.
Trees,
life giving eternal an emblem of nature, perseverance, strength, beauty all melded into one form of matter, trees always giving us all they have without asking anything in return.

Cambridge Science Curiosity Challenge Winners from Haggerty!

Sara M. in 4th Grade
First, we learned about waterwheels in science and how they generate energy for the Lowell Mills. Then, it was time for the Curiosity Challenge.  I thought and thought and had an idea! “How long does it take to make a water wheel for energy?”
I drew a colorful picture of the Merrimack River and people who made the cloth at the Lowell Mills. In conclusion, the water wheel made me think!  Next year, you should take the Curiosity Challenge!

Poetry - continued

I am a Tree by Hepzibah
I am a tree. big and strong tall enough to touch the sky.
I am a tree. I feel the gentle kiss and warm glow of the sun.
I am a tree. I feel the great push of the wind.
I am a tree. I feel the light tickle by all the critters and Insects.
I am a tree. I feel the coolness of the rain and the pitter patters of it falling.
I am a tree. I give shade to all who see me and embrace me.
I am a tree that gives life to others when I’m gone.

Spring By Naryya
Spring
There is vibrancy in the air,
Spring,
brings new hope,
it gives us a new
scope.
Butterflies
hovered without worry,
fireflies light up the night
Winter ran away with a scury.

Second grade remote has been learning about alliteration, personification, simile and repetition in poetry.  Here are some poems they have written.

Sadeq
I am as nice as a feather.
I am as soft as a bouncy house.
My glasses are as green as the grass.
My eyes are as brown as a tree branch.
My hair is dark like the dark night.
I am strong like a superhero

Harlow
Sun/Moon
The sun tucks away
It goes to sleep in its' little cloud bed.
The moon tucks away when it's day
It comes out at night to say "Hi" to its' bat friend.
