Haggerty Day - 6/16 - SAVE THE DATE
Haggerty Day 2021 is on June 16th! It will be a celebration for our whole school. Many details are still being worked out - but we'd love some parent/caregiver volunteers so please stay tuned.
One purpose of Haggerty Day is to bring remote and in-person students together for fun activities. It will be entirely outside.
Here are the details as we know them right now:
- Haggerty Day 2021 will be on Wednesday, June 16th.
- Each grade level will have approximately one hour of activities, outside, sometime between 8:30 or 9:00 and 12:00 on that day.
- Activities may include things like drumming, art/chalk/graffiti, face painting, bubbles, street performers, and so forth.
- We are working on the schedule, transportation for remote learners, and slots for parent/caregiver volunteers.
- Once we have the schedule, we will be reaching out to remote student's families directly.
- Please Stay Tuned!

What is it?
Full of water
Full of sweet
Juicy messy
Sweet to eat
Dessert of summer
Picnic Jewel
Ruby red
And oh so cool

When I run I am quick as lightning.
I become the wind.
I am happy as honey when I am calm.
It is sweet.
Sometimes I am a monster.
I beat my chest and feel strong.

That familiar scent
The soft ears against my cheeks

Spring Stars
When the evening falls
I stare up at the golden stars
Seeing as the clouds form over the bright moon
Spring wind whooshes brushing across my face
The dream comes falling from the sky.
One light star landing gently like a feather
In my cupped hands
It’s shining brightly and it lifts into the air.
I look up and I see the moon’s shining face
It seems to say
Thank you for saving my star
As the bright little point is pulled up into oblivion
I raise my hand in good bye
And it spins through the air
It takes its place by the moons side
I sit down and gaze at them
Shining brightly
Those beautiful spring stars.

Spring Appeal on NOW!
Fundraising reminder: Friends of Haggerty needs your support! The annual spring fundraising appeal is happening now. We have raised about $2,000 of our $5,000 goal. We rely on your donations to fund artist and author visits, field trips, enrichment, and events. Thank you very much to the 19 families who have already donated. There's still time for those who haven't, and any amount helps. This is our *only* fund drive this year, and it will determine what opportunities we can offer to students next year. Please help us meet our goal so we can help teachers and students' meet theirs!
Coach's Corner: ELA by Suzanne Russell
It’s Spring in New England but it’s Non-Fiction season in our Grade 2 classrooms. Students are studying non-fiction topics of their interests and then teaching other classmates and teachers all about their research and expertise. 2nd graders are using different search engines to do research and to collect information about some amazing topics. Water Bison, Grizzly Bears, Horses, Somalia, Geckos, Fennec foxes and Spiders are just a few of the topics our students have been researching. Last week, students in Ms. Callender’s class joined up with Ms. Doherty’s class in a virtual share. Our second graders presented their research to the first graders. It was so fun to see the first graders and the second graders were so happy to have a real audience! While the virtual share was amazing, we’ll be planning many more in person Expert Fairs in the future!

Math by Nili Pearlmutter
As the weather warms and more and more people are vaccinated, we hope you are getting outside more! The outdoors is a great place to help your child’s math brain keep growing. One way to have fun with math outdoors is to come up with mathematical questions together and estimate answers.
Some questions could be questions you can answer, like “How many steps until the end of the block?” or “How many tires on those 2 cars?” or “How many windows on the building?” Estimate first - then find out!
Some questions could be questions that you CAN’T get an exact answer to, like “How many leaves on the tree?” or “How many trees are there in Cambridge?” Or “How many squirrels live in the park?” Estimate and then talk about what you think. Don’t worry about getting an answer - the learning happens just in talking about it! And the questions might even spark some scientific research later on.
If your child enjoys these kinds of questions, look for this book from the library: How Many Guinea Pigs Can Fit on a Plane? by Laura Overdeck.
Yours in Math!
