Zones of Regulation

This year we are pleased to introduce “Zones of Regulation” as an all school approach to support social emotional learning. We will begin a slow, intentional rollout of the program with students across grade levels in October. We encourage families to read and to learn about this new approach to teaching emotional awareness. The more parents and families are involved, the more successful students will be.

As we implement the program, please be on the look out for information, games and activities to do at home.

What is Zones of Regulation?
Zones of Regulation is an approach used to support the development of self-regulation in children. All the different ways children feel and the states of alertness they experience are categorized into four colored zones. Children who are well regulated are able to be in the appropriate zone at the appropriate time.

Blue Zone: tired, sad e.g. getting ready to go to bed
Green Zone: calm, happy e.g. doing a puzzle at table
Yellow Zone: silly, frustrated e.g. playing chase game with friends
Red Zone: angry, out of control e.g. jumping with excitement

Why use Zones of Regulation? To teach children how to:

  • Identify their feelings
  • Be aware of what zone they are in

The Zones of Regulation® is a framework and easy-to-use curriculum for teaching students strategies for emotional and sensory self-management. Rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy, The Zones approach uses four colors to help students identify how they are feeling in the moment given their emotions and level of alertness as well as guide them to strategies to support regulation. By understanding how to notice their body’s signals, detect triggers, read social context and consider how their behavior impact those around them, students learn improved emotional control, sensory regulation, self-awareness, and problem-solving abilities.

Who’s who at MLK

wilnie louisMeet our new Social Worker
Wilnie Louis
Ms Louis comes to us most recently from the Somerville Public Schools where she was a Crisis Counselor and the School Adjustment Counselor. Prior to being in Somerville, Ms Louis was a Behavioral Specialist in Boston Public Schools.

Ms Louis has always wanted to work with kids and to give them a safe space to “unapologetically be themselves.”

“Being a Haitian immigrant (came to the United States at 6 years old) I remember what it’s like to try to navigate a new language and a new culture. I want to be one of the reasons that students look forward to coming to school everyday.”

So far, Ms Louis has been impressed by the MLK’s prioritizing of social emotional learning and that the staff really “put students first.”

Her goals for the year are to.. "Take it one day at a time and to get to know every student by name (even with the masks).”

From the Garden

Sydney SpicerHello from the CitySprouts garden at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School. My name is Sydney Spicer, and I am the Garden Educator, working with Kindergarten through 5th grade to teach students about science and curiosity in the garden.

Throughout the year, classes and I work together to plant seeds, observe our growing plants, experiment with things like decomposition, and explore in a hands--on fashion in the garden. From growing radishes to figuring out what makes a plant decompose in our compost - we do it all.

In the garden right now, we are winding down our summer crops. This means our tomatoes and eggplants are slowly being replaced by cold-hardy crops like kale, broccoli, spinach, and more. However, there is still something to be harvested everyday!

I look forward to seeing your students out in the garden this year, and getting to explore with them through all the seasons!
