Message from Christen Sohn

Good afternoon CSUS Parents and Caregivers,

As we navigate the start of the school year amid a years-long pandemic and following many months of mostly remote teaching and learning, we are finding, unsurprisingly, that our scholars' needs are different this year in comparison to years past. Children spent a significant amount of time apart from teachers, counselors, and peers, and now we are seeing scholars’ social emotional needs manifesting in new and different ways. It is hard for scholars to process the fear and uncertainty of global events at the best of times, let alone when they are isolated from the wider school community. We are noticing that, for some scholars at Cambridge Street and across the district, the impact of prolonged isolation is visible in scholars’ difficulties with interpersonal conflict and building relationships. CSUS will continue to teach social skills and build community in our classes and advisories. We are also planning school-wide programming to address these needs and to celebrate scholars’ many successes.

What remains the same as in previous years is that our scholars are resilient, and have jumped back into learning with tenacity. We are so excited to continue sharing their continued learning with you! Thank you for entrusting Cambridge Street with your scholar’s learning. We understand that you have choices regarding your child’s education, and we appreciate you choosing CSUS.

Here’s what’s going on at CSUS this week:

MCAS Reports being mailed home
MCAS Parent Reports for grades 3-10 have been mailed to families.
Each packet includes:

Please email Ms. Howard if you have not received your MCAS score report, or if you have any questions.

Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month concluded on October 15. This year, Cambridge Street scholars honored Hispanic Heritage month through creating art, experiencing new forms of dance, learning about the contributions of Hispanic/Latinx Americans, sharing culturally significant recipes, and more. Scholar artwork is currently on digital display in the CSUS Main Lobby. Our Student Council is also gathering recipes from families and community members in recognition of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. We invite you to contribute here if you haven’t already!

Water bottles
Per current COVID policy, our water fountains are not in use at this time. We are asking that scholars bring their own reusable water bottle with their name on it to use throughout the day.

Scholar Chromebooks are ready to take home!
All students will be receiving CPS laptops to take home with them. In order to receive the laptop, students will need a signed Upper School Device Agreement by Wednesday, November 10. Families can fill this out online at the CPS family portal. You or your student can also pick up a hard copy from the main office. Any student without a signed form will have access to a computer at school but will NOT be allowed to take the laptop home. Need help with getting internet access or finding more affordable options? Please contact Ms. Danen. Please see the video for a tutorial of how to fill out the form online.

Scholar vaccination updates and schedule
See here for the most up to date information on scholar vaccinations, including timelines/deadlines, how to upload vaccine status, and exemptions.

Thank you for your patience in awaiting this week’s Tuesday Take Home letter!

Go Cobras,
Christen
