Second Grade Examines Micro-Habitats of Logs

Our 2nd graders have been busy learning about the micro-habitat of rotting logs during science. As part of this unit both 2nd grade classes have worked with Gardener Heather in the Haggerty garden and took a walking field trip to Fresh Pond. These outdoor experiences have allowed students to explore the micro-habitat of rotting logs. Children enjoyed discovering the many living things that can be found under and around logs in both settings.

Music Corner by Mx. Irvin

Regina carterThe November Musician of the Month is Regina Carter, violinist originally from Detroit, who defies categories. Carter plays classical, jazz, and across every genre. Ask your child to show you the moves to Artistiya, a collaboration from her album Reverse Thread. Artistiya is an interpretation of the original piece by blind Malian Afro-pop couple Amadou and Mariam. Listen for the call and response between the violin and the kora. Listen to Regina Carter and past Musicians of the Month on our Spotify playlist!

Math Corner by Nili Pearlmutter

In your child’s classroom there is a poster with our Math Norms! These Math Norms help build our community and create a growth mindset. We want students to know that making mistakes and asking questions is what mathematicians do! If your child is ever feeling stuck with math at home, remind them of our norms. Help them ask questions, let them know mistakes are okay!

It's Winter Clothing Time!

The weather is feeling more and more like winter. Please remember to dress your children for cold weather. We will be going outside for snack/lunch on dry days, as well as recess. It's really helpful for the children to have enough clothing.

We will set up our annual winter clothing exchange inside school soon. If you have any items (jackets, boots, mittens, or snowpants) to donate you can bring them to the front door - or you can send me a note if you student needs any winter items!

Let's help each other stay warm and continue to enjoy outside!

Thanks for your help!

Tech Tidbits by Kevin McGonegal

There are many online academic resources available to Haggerty students on home computers via the Classlink Launchpad! By logging into the Launchpad with their CPS Google Accounts, our students can access the same apps we use in school, which depending on grade level may include many or all academic subjects, plus keyboarding and coding activities as well as access to all of our Library databases and resources. The Launchpad is a "Single Sign-on" system, meaning once they log into it with their Google account, their password for all of our various apps will be filled in automatically. It's like magic! Check it out here >>

If you're unsure of your student's Google login credentials, follow the scheme below. For example, if David Ortiz was a Haggerty Kindergartner with a birthday of July 4, 2015, his login would be: [email protected] (the 34 represents 2034, our kindergarteners' year of high school graduation) with a password of 07042015. Email me if you need any help with this!
