Music Corner

Yuja WangThe Musician of the Month for December is pianist Yuja Wang. She's an incredible performer and fashionista, too! Hailing from Beijing, China, and studying in Canada and the U.S. besides, this prodigy is only 34 years old. We've been listening to a lot of piano music performed by Wang and even watched a few videos. Check some out with your family at home!

Yuja Wang plays Flight of the Bumblebee, which kindergarteners will know is allegro!

Short video that is both hilarious (shows Yuja Wang playing multiple instruments, as well as the piano backwards) and an ad.

Yuja Wang performs at the Verbier Festival in 2016.

Yuja Wang plays Chopin with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas.

As always, please be in touch with any questions or ideas!

Math Coach Corner

Winter break is coming soon. I hope your family has time to enjoy being together. A great way to have fun and grow your math minds is to play games! Here are a few that I recommend. (And if you are a family that gives gifts over this season, these make good gifts, too.)

  • A deck of cards!! (All ages - here are lots of game ideas)
  • Tiny Polka Dots (K - 2nd grade - This is a special deck of cards that comes with many game ideas.)
  • Clumsy Thief in the Candy Shop (1st grade and up)
  • Mastermind (3rd grade and up)
  • Quixx (3rd grade and up)
  • Prime Climb (4th grade and up)

Have a healthy and joyous vacation!

For parents! A very robust article featuring one hundred different suggestions for how to engage in conversations about race with your kids. Research shows that kids start developing racial biases when they’re only three, so it’s never too early to start the conversation!

  • "100 Race Conscious Things You Can Say to Your Child to Advance Racial Justice." Read article >>

For families to read together! Book recommendations to help your kids learn about the unique attributes that make a person whole. Both these books are available from the Cambridge Public Library.

Students in Grades 1 and 3 received a personal water bottle to use at school to promote oral health. The program visits classrooms to teach an oral health lesson about the benefits of drinking water and how to take care of their teeth during their school day.
