Message from Christen Sohn

Good afternoon CSUS Parents and Caregivers,

A belated Happy New Year to all! Many kudos and much appreciation to the members of our community who supported last week’s testing, tracing, and communication efforts. With characteristic flexibility and perseverance, CSUS staff and scholars are eager to jump back into teaching and learning in 2022!

January 15th marks Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. The official holiday will be observed next Monday, January 17th. For some it is a day to sleep in. For others it will be a day of volunteerism. How will your family and community honor Dr. King’s legacy?

The King Center in Atlanta, GA promotes the holiday as a day to embrace Dr. King’s philosophy and strategy of nonviolence to eliminate poverty, racism and violence. One way to support this philosophy is to join The 2022 Cambridge MLK Day of Service and Learning, which is offering virtual and in person events January 17-20.

As a community, we are continuing conversations with kids about what it means to be a CSUS SCHOLAR. We are celebrating scholars’ achievements in Social Justice and Curiosity at our whole school (virtual) assembly later this month. CSUS 8th graders are contemplating community service opportunities as a part of their pathway to graduation.

We are also launching CSUS’ Equity Team. The Equity Team is a body of educators, scholars, caregivers, and community members that will work together to improve the school’s past and current efforts to ensure academic success for all students by closing opportunity gaps for students, providing culturally proficient teaching and learning practices, and ensuring equitable and inclusive environments for all students, families, staff, and community partners with an intentional equity-focused anti-racist lens.

Our first meeting will take place virtually along with our School Site Council on January 20 from 6:30-7:30PM. Please email me for the link or for more information.

Please see the next page for more updates, reminders, and upcoming events at CSUS

Cold Weather Update
With the dropping temperatures this week, we want to remind families that scholars have the opportunity to go outside most days. Please make sure your scholar has adequate cold weather clothing. Families have inquired about outdoor eating in cold weather; our goal is to provide scholars with a choice of eating inside or outside whenever weather and staffing permit. In extreme inclement weather, all scholars will eat inside.

COVID Updates
New quarantine protocols were emailed to families on January 8. You can view the updated protocol here. If you have any questions about this or any part of the testing process, please feel free to reach out to me.

Thursday, Jan 12
CSUS Girls’ Volleyball Championship Game at CSUS. Spectators are unfortunately not permitted at this time but we are eager to share the outcome with our community! Good luck and Go Cobras!

Thursday, Jan 20
CSUS’ first School Site Council and Equity Team meetings for the year will be a joint meeting held virtually on January 20 from 6:30-7:30. If you are interested in joining either team or in learning more about these opportunities please email me.

Friday, Jan 21
An update that this year’s CSUS Theatre performance date has changed. Our performance will be live streamed on the evening of Friday, January 21. The evening will consist of 2 one-act plays, “Chaired,” by Christian Kiley and “Finishing Sentences,” by Scott Giessler. Stay tuned for virtual ticketing information.

Thank you for entrusting us with your scholar’s learning. We understand that you have choices regarding your child’s education, and appreciate you choosing CSUS. Your partnership and trust are a huge part of what makes CSUS spell SUCCESS!

Have a warm week,
Christen
