Reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Either this week or next week, all grades are doing a reflection and art activity to think about the ways they benefit from Dr. King’s work personally and the ways they will act to ensure his works keep moving forward. Check out this slideshow for the video students watch and then the “footprint” activity (pictured below) to creatively display student ideas.

Listening Conferences–please check your emails next week for an invitation from your student’s advisor!

listening conferenceFamilies: This week, you should be hearing from your student’s advisor about signing up for a listening conference:

  • When will the conferences be?
    • Between February 7 and Feb. 18
  • How long is the conference?
    • 15-20 minutes
  • Who should be at the conference?
    • You, your student and your student’s advisor
  • What will you discuss?
    • Semester progress
    • Any ideas you have for how to continue to support your student’s learning.
  • What else?
    • Please also plan an additional 5-10 minutes after the conference to take a short online survey from our school.
    • We really want to hear from families about how we are doing.
    • We have used family feedback in the past to help develop our schedule, adjust our back to school night, and improve our communications.
    • School Council will look at survey answers to identify major themes and actionable steps we can take to make our school more welcoming and responsive.
    • We will report back to you in the newsletter–likely in the spring to allow School Council time to reflect and respond.
    • We look forward to hearing from you!

RAUC Teacher in the News!

Tom TrainorWe are pleased to announce that Tom Trainor (pictured right), 8th grade civics teacher at RAUC, was profiled in "Teaching Civics After January 6th" in US News and World Report.

Over the past three and a half years, Tom and other CPS 8th grade civics teachers worked closely with the department and Harvard's Democratic Knowledge Project to create, implement and refine a new curriculum, "Civic Education in our Democracy," that is aligned with the 2018 HSS Framework and includes the state-required student-led civic engagement project. This curriculum has been recognized by DESE for its high quality, and was one of only four core civics curriculum materials of nearly 100 reviewed that met DESE’s expectations.

RAUC-on Mr. Trainor!
