Equity Update

Equity UpdateUpdate on School Council/Equity Team

  • Last week, our school council looked at the results of the family survey–about 50% of our families took the survey, representing all our demographics. (Note: if you haven't taken the survey yet, you can still take it here.)
    • The results of the survey were overwhelmingly positive:
      • Most people (~90%) felt the school felt the school was welcoming, cared about learning, and communicated clearly
      • Most people (~84%) also knew who to contact if they had a concern and felt comfortable doing so.
    • Some questions:
      • What were the reasons some people didn’t always feel their concerns were treated with respect?
      • What could the school do to be more consistent in supporting the academic growth of all students?
    • Next steps:
      • At future meetings, we will reflect on these wonders and other questions that came up with a focus on how to dig deeper.
  • We also started our group equity self-assessment. A reminder that all schools in the district are doing equity self-assessments. This is part of the work of the new district Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
  • School council meetings are open to the whole community. To view the last meeting’s notes, click here. To get the link for the next meeting, please register here or email Julia Ho.

Equity Collaborative

  • We’re excited to announce that one of our projects has been selected for the Spring 2022 Equity Collaborative, sponsored by the district Office of Equity, Inclusion and Belonging!
  • The purpose of the project is to listen to and hear from more of our families who have been historically underrepresented about their experiences with our school and ways we can improve our family-school partnership.
  • We look forward to sharing more information about this in future newsletters.

Looking ahead to Ramadan

Ramadan 2022We know Ramadan is a holy month for many in our community. We have plans to support students who will be fasting during Ramadan.

  • Cafeteria: students have options so that they are not required to sit in the cafeteria during lunch period.
    • We will make sure students and families are aware of these closer to the start of Ramadan.
  • Gym: Students will still participate in gym class with accommodations. These can include…
    • Sitting on the side for high-energy activities
    • Participating at a lower-energy level
  • Take home meals
