Shift to Mask-Optional
As you know, starting Monday masks are optional at RAUC. We recognize people have all sorts of feelings about this shift, from excited to anxious, with many falling somewhere in-between. In preparation for this policy shift, all advisories reflected with students last week. Our goals were:
To support students in understanding the facts about the policy shift, including the rationale for it.
- To ensure our community was prepared to make everyone feel welcomed whatever their mask wearing choice.
- Students identified reasons someone may choose to still wear a mask and the range of feelings people may have around the policy.
- Students discussed what a welcoming and compassionate commUnity looks, sounds, and feels like when some people wear masks and some don’t.
A reminder that masks remain mandatory on visits to the nurse’s office. Please reach out to your student’s advisor if you have any concerns about your student’s response to the new policy.

6th Grade Social Studies Students on CEA TV!
![UN Border Conflict UN Border Conflict](https://www.cpsd.us/UserFiles/Servers/Server_3042785/Image/newsletters/raus/2021-22/un-border-conflict.png)
Tune into Cambridge Educational Access TV (CEATV) channel 98/99 to watch RAUC 6th graders present their Social Studies projects!
- Click here for the schedule for airings and the full video.
- About the project:
- In October, 6th grade students completed a project on border conflicts. In the project, they assumed the role of a Youth United Nations Ambassador and researched an existing border conflict and came up with possible solutions. They then created a presentation of their findings to the UN. These border conflict projects are as relevant now as they were back in October!
Shout out to Gisel Saillant, RAUC 6th grade social studies teacher, and 6th graders for all their hard work!

Highlights of Science at RAUC
Broad Institute
Caption: Broad Institute volunteer helps students make “DNA necklaces.”
- This month through April, three scientist volunteers from the Broad Institute are working with our 8th graders.
- Every Friday, they help teach a class based on their direct experiences from the lab and research they have done.
- Past students have loved learning from scientists and loved learning about what scientists do.
Netpals
- We’re excited to announce that our NetPals program, which has been at RAUC for almost 20 years, is starting again! This has always been a student favorite.
- In the NetPals program, seventh grade students are matched with an on-line mentor from a local STEM company.
- STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math
- Students and mentors then communicate over several months with a culminating “Science Fair” in May.
- Through the NetPals program, students…
- Practice their communication skills
- Learn how to build a relationship with a professional person using e-mail.
- Share more about what they’re learning in the classroom
- Learn more about how science is applied outside the classroom
8th grade field trip to Museum of Science
- This Thursday, 8th grade students are going on a field trip to the Museum of Science. There, they will explore the interactive exhibit “The Hall of Human Life.”
- This might be something your family might also want to experience. Did you know there are ways to get free admission to the Museum of Science?
- Sixth graders will also be visiting the museum in April. Stay tuned for more info!

RAUC student caught doing good
A special shout-out to RAUC 7th grader Anna Kehayova who used her skills in violin to do some good! She and a fellow 7th grader from Newton have been playing music together since they were in 3rd grade. On Feb. 26th, they performed Beethoven's Spring sonata. Through their performance, they raised funds for a Ukrainian charity that helps Ukrainian children affected by the war. The two of them raised $1600!
