Message from Christen Sohn

Good afternoon CSUS Parents and Caregivers,

This week, CPS will mail a copy of your child’s iReady math and ELA growth to all families. It shows scholars’ growth and understanding of grade level math and ELA topics from fall to winter.

iReady is an adaptive test. What does that mean?

  • The questions get harder or easier based on how the scholar answers. It does this until it finds the “just right” level.
  • Scholars are NOT EXPECTED to know every answer.
  • Questions are different for every scholar.
  • It is given 3 times each year: Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Teachers use iReady results as one of several data points to plan instruction that meets the specific needs of scholars.

It is important to know that this diagnostic is a snapshot specific to one test on one day; it may or may not reflect a full or complete picture of the learning and growth a scholar has shown in the classroom since September. It is one of the many reasons for our commitment to Scholar Led Conferences; to provide families an opportunity to see and hear about scholar’s accomplishments and challenges from the scholar’s perspective based on a body of classwork and projects.

More detailed information about the iReady report will be mailed home with your child’s scores. If you have questions about your child’s iReady report, please reach out directly to your child’s ELA or math teacher, or the ELA and Math coaches, Connie Henderson and Marisa Berenbaum.

I am pleased to report that, as a school, CSUS scholars performed above or near expected growth for the winter session. We hope that this knowledge, along with what your scholar shared at their Scholar Led Conference, provides information for a rich conversation about learning, growth, and goals with your scholar at home.

COVID Updates
Last week from 3/16-3/22 we had 1 positive COVID case. Families at the impacted grade level will receive a separate communication from CSUS.

If you are interested in receiving weekly at-home rapid tests for your scholar, opt-in through the CPS Family Portal or by contacting Ms. Howard. Rapid tests should be administered Friday mornings before school. Positive results should be reported to the Main Office.

Looking ahead: MCAS testing

  • ELA: Wednesday, April 6th and Thursday, April 7th
  • Math: Wednesday, May 4th and Thursday, May 5th
  • STE (8th grade only): Monday, May 18th and Tuesday, May 19th
  • Scholars in our Small Learning Communities may test on other/additional days as staffing allows. Your child’s teacher will communicate MCAS dates with you directly.

Thank you for entrusting us with your scholar’s learning. We understand that you have choices regarding your child’s education, and appreciate you choosing CSUS. Your partnership and trust are a huge part of what makes CSUS spell SUCCESS!

Have a wonderful rest of the week!
Christen

Thank You! from the CSUS Parent Caregiver Organization (PCO)

We are happy to report that the annual winter food gift card drive received $3,048 in generous donations, which enabled us to give support to families in the CSUS community over the winter break. You made a difference!

After the last school year in which the PCO only raised $3,700, we are still seeking donations so that we can do teacher appreciation events. If you are able to give, you can give online here or mail/drop off checks to the school for “Cambridge Street Upper School PCO.”

Are you good with numbers? The PCO is seeking a caregiver with a student in 6th grade to become assistant treasurer to help keep our books. Contact Tina if you're interested.
